London, 29 May 2002. Brits would travel more if we had more bank holidays reveals a UK survey released today by online travel service Opodo*. In the survey, conducted by independent research organisation ICM, over 70% said they would pack a bag and take off if we had more long weekends.

The UK has some of the lowest number of bank holidays – only eight - compared with 12 in Italy, 13 in Austria and up to 14 in both Spain and Portugal. However this year we have an extra day off and people are taking advantage of it to book a weekend away.

The Scots are making the most of the 4-day weekend – 9% have already booked a trip abroad, closely followed by the North West and Yorkshire and Humberside, where 8% have decided to take to the skies. Those in the North East on the other hand are staying at home, although 6% of people are hoping to book a last minute trip abroad.

Jenny Taylor, UK Country Manager for Opodo, comments “The extra bank holiday is a great time to get away. More and more people are booking weekend breaks away at the last minute, waiting to see what deals are available. City breaks both in Europe and at home in the UK are extremely popular and the great deals that are around at the moment mean people can afford to go away more often – especially if we had a few more bank holidays!”

The survey also revealed that people in the West Midlands would be the most likely to take more trips in the UK, (61%) compared to only 44% in the North West. The East Midlanders are the most adventurous lot, 11% would take more breaks further a-field, compared to only 3% of people in the North East and London. is the new online travel service that launched in January in the UK offering fares that are cheaper than the UK average online fare for 85% of top destinations from the UK**.
