London, England – 31 May 2002 – Owners of Hauppauge's "Nova-T" digital TV receivers will have the best seats in the house for this year's World Cup. The company is the only TV-on-a-PC supplier to support the extra features unveiled today by BBCi, including extra channels for live and repeated matches, highlights, an in-depth interactive text service and dedicated coverage of the England camp out in Japan and Korea.

Available immediately from all major retailers*, from £99.99 inc VAT, the Hauppauge devices do not require a subscription to pick up these free-to-air digital channels, nor a satellite dish. The devices, known as Nova-T, use a standard PC to process and display the services, offering lightning-fast response plus the ability to record high-quality digital, widescreen broadcast directly to disk for later playback.

Additionally, four "clashing" group matches, which the BBC has rights to, will be televised simultaneously and available on the Nova-T on BBCi – known as "multistream video" during live matches. Viewers of regular TV, for example, will miss the live Sweden v Argentina game on June 12th as it clashes with the Nigeria v England game.

At the launch of BBCi's World Cup coverage, Andrew Thompson, Head of New Media, BBC Sport said: "We've got so much fantastic TV coverage coming out of Japan and Korea it's tremendous that TV technology has advanced fast enough for all our digital viewers to be able to see extra footage.

"The most important aspect of this development is for the viewer – for the first time, they can access similar additional services in the same way and that's a powerful message for the future of sport on interactive TV."

The company, which designs interactive TV and gaming systems, described the updated, interactive Hauppauge Nova-T as the best TV experience ever. "WinTV Nova-T benefits from all the resources of a PC behind it to deliver lightning-fast, interactive services," said Yehia Oweiss, MD of Hauppauge. "We are very excited about digital TV, and see huge potential in highly functional PC products like the WinTV Nova-T as a the best way to get digital TV into UK homes."

Hauppauge has teamed up with UK-based Cabot Communications for the underlying MHEG-5 software technology, which provides Hauppauge users with Digital Teletext. Ken Helps Director of Cabot stated "All our software developers love the speed of the Digital WinTV product; it's a great combination of Hauppauge hardware and Cabot software offering a quality solution for Digital TV viewers. A new consumer experience never before offered for under £100."

BBCi World Cup Interactive - Digital Terrestrial

Hauppauge Digital Terrestrial viewers will have the option of three video streams during live BBC World Cup matches. A "press red" icon will appear on-screen during live World Cup broadcasts to let digital viewers know extra video streams are available to view.

Viewers can then access highlights or extra footage. On-screen instructions in the form of a banner along the bottom of the screen inform the viewer how to access the different full-screen services at all times.

· The Highlights package shows a loop of all the action, incidents and near-misses from the current match, which allows you to catch up if you come in late or watch the glory goals again.

· The Extra stream shows either a different live match with coverage from one of
the "clashing" group matches in the later stages of the tournament, or when there are no alternative live matches, the extra stream will offer analysis with a high level camera view of the game showing a tactical look at how play is developing, plus commentary from well known football coaches.

The four "clashing" group matches which the BBC has rights to later in the tournament which look set to be televised at the same time as the live BBC game via the extra option in the pull down menu:
Wednesday 12 June: 7.30am Nigeria v England and Sweden v Argentina
Thursday 13 June: 7.30am Costa Rica v Brazil and Turkey v China
12.30pm Mexico v Italy and Ecuador v Croatia
Friday 14 June: 7.30am Tunisia v Japan and Belarus v Russia
