BACKGROUND ON OSAP

The OSAP 1600 product is expected to have a significant effect, broadening the potential European market for Ethernet Services (see definition below).

Previously, Ethernet services have either been limited to basic point-to-point solutions or have demanded the building of a costly new overlay network. Appian’s OSAP provides a cost effective alternative route to the provision of a broad range of advanced Ethernet services, which also enables carriers to continue providing existing customers with TDM and traditional voice services.

The new OSAP 1600 now enables carriers to extend these services (pioneered by the OSAP 4800) as a more compact, lower density metro optical access platform. Carriers benefit from the ability to cost-effectively extend high-value Ethernet services to a larger set of metropolitan area customers

ABOUT ETHERNET SERVICES

Ethernet Services allow carriers to offer the end-user the simplicity of a single plug-in-the-wall for all data services, and the benefits of more flexible services, more granular bandwidth and even bandwidth on demand that can be differentiated according to the time of day. Ethernet also provides a more cost effective solution for the carriers than older metro networking technologies, allowing them to take advantage of packet economies to optimise bandwidth usage. With AppianVista software, carriers also reduce operating costs through the ability to maintain and provision new services remotely without the need for on site service teams.

APPIAN COMMUNICATIONS EXTENDS THE REACH OF HIGH-REVENUE ETHERNET SERVICES

New OSAP 1600 Offers Carriers a New Cost Effective Solution to Provide Ethernet Services to Lower Density Metro Areas and Out of Town Business Parks

Appian Communications, the first to enable carrier-class Ethernet-over-SDH/SONET services, today announced the launch of its new OSAP 1600, a fully functional entry-level platform, optimised for carriers to extend multi-service Ethernet-over-SDH/SONET services to lower density building and office-park locations. The OSAP 1600 provides a cost-effective solution for lower density deployments, enabling carriers to offer the advanced Ethernet-over-SONET/SDH and TDM services pioneered by the award-winning OSAP 4800 to a larger set of metropolitan area customers.

“The OSAP 1600 is a solution which is particularly suited to the European markets,” comments Mark Weeks, Appian’s Vice President EMEA. “It is ideal for providers who value the rich functionality of the OSAP 4800, and are looking for lower density, smaller footprint, and lower cost. This enables carriers to extend Ethernet services into suburban business areas and commerce parks in Europe which already use SDH optical networks.”

OSAP 1600 Technical Overview

Based on the hybrid packet/TDM architecture of Appian’s OSAP 4800, the OSAP 1600 supports a mix of Fast Ethernet, full rate Gigabit Ethernet, TDM and protected OC-3/STM-1 to OC-48/STM-16 transport interfaces in a modular platform that addresses a broad range of carrier applications. With support for common hardware and software across the OSAP product line, the OSAP 1600 supports Appian’s full suite of carrier-class Ethernet services, including secure Ethernet Private Lines, and scalable Ethernet access to Internet, frame relay and ATM services. The OSAP 1600 is also managed and provisioned via the proven AppianVista™ Services and Element Manager, enabling rapid integration of next generation packet services into a carrier’s existing OSS environment.

About Appian Communications

Appian is removing the final metro area bottleneck to new optical service revenues. Designed to enable growth in carrier revenue and profitability, the Appian solution combines the low cost and simplicity of Ethernet with the resilience and scale of established SDH/SONET networks to enable carrier-class Ethernet services that include secure Ethernet Private Lines, Virtual Private LANs and scalable Internet Access. With its integrated TDM service support, the Optical Services Activation Platform™ (OSAP™) is a best-of-breed solution that simplifies the migration from today’s rigid, circuit-optimised voice and private line offerings to these next-generation service offers.
