IBM Global Services and Goodyear Europe have signed a five-year strategic outsourcing agreement. Jean De Cannihre, IBM Global Services Strategic Outsourcing & Integrated Technology Services Executive for Belgium/ Luxembourg and Hermann Lange, Goodyear Luxembourg's financial director, signed an extension of their initial seven-year contract for IBM Global Services to take full charge of the management of Goodyear's central mainframe server at its Colmar-Berg site in Luxembourg.

Under the terms of the contract, Goodyear is guaranteed service twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. It also opens up the way to lower maintenance costs and the latest technological developments.

Kenneth M Tweedie, Goodyear's IT Infrastructure Director for the European Union/Eastern Europe, Middle east & Africa said: "In 1996, we decided to outsource the management of our mainframe. We had three main aims: to reduce our costs, ensure we had permanent access to the human and technical resources needed to ensure the smooth running of our operations, and to focus on the move towards the "Client Server" world. IBM provides the best guarantees, value for money, and has kept its promises. In signing this extension to the contract, we are showing our satisfaction with them."

Marcel Origer, IBM Global Services Project Executive said: "A team of fifteen people provides continuous management of all of Goodyear Europe's mainframe processes. The mainframe serves over 3000 users, who connect up from all Goodyear sites throughout Europe, the Middle East, Far East, and Africa. IBM takes charge of complete management of the hardware, maintenance of the operating system, and mainframe system tools. It is a 120 MIPS CPU with one terabyte of overall disk storage capacity. We have also put in place security and emergency back-up procedures in case of any system failure. The contract also covers finance for hardware and software applications. Goodyear remains in full charge of applications product-development and maintenance."
