High-Availability Gigabit Ethernet Solution Improves Network Efficiency & Supports Video Streaming Plans

June 11, 2002 Enterasys Networks Inc. (NYSE: ETS), a leader in enterprise networking solutions, announced that the Spain-based Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has chosen Enterasys high-performance X-Pedition 8000 switch routers for its network infrastructure upgrade.

The new high-speed Gigabit Ethernet solution improves the efficiency and availability of business-critical applications for all of the Museum's back-office departments. The Enterasys LAN infrastructure will also support the planned introduction of new on-line multimedia applications. Ongoing artist interviews, presentations and conferences will be recorded, archived and broadcast to students, researchers and employees, enhancing the range of services available to visitors of the Museum. The project was won in partnership with Siemens Information & Communications Networks who served as Enterasys integration partner.

We needed to improve the performance of the network, increasing the available bandwidth, redundancy and fault-tolerance in the system. We also had to ensure any new network would be flexible enough for our plans to introduce new applications in the future. We knew that the combination of Enterasys and Siemens was a winning ticket, commented Luis Pablo Elvira, the Museum's associate director of Information Services. Since the introduction of the new network, our users have noticed faster transaction response times. Moreover, the network is now fully prepared for the transmission not only of data, but also of video and even voice traffic.

The solution includes Enterasys X-Pedition 8000 multilayer switch routers powering the enterprise backbone and Vertical Horizon stackable switches providing 10/100 Fast Ethernet to each user's desktop, according to individual needs. The new infrastructure assures the high-availability of bandwidth-intensive marketing, design, ticketing, finance and general administrative applications for more than 200 users. The total solution is managed by Enterasys NetSight Atlas management solution, enabling the museum to manage its new infrastructure as a strategic business asset.

The X-Pedition 8000 switch router can handle the aggregated traffic at wire speed. As the packets travel across the network, they move at the highest speed, even where applications are prioritized. This level of performance was a major factor in choosing Enterasys equipment. In turn, Enterasys support for customers and clear guidance surrounding product direction and enhancements, while protecting existing investment in the equipment, helped assure us that we made the right choice, commented Elvira. Other influencing factors included Enterasys Networks position as a leading networking manufacturer and Enterasys partnership with Siemens as a top-level integrator. The result enabled the successful implementation of the project, he concluded.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is an important example of how organizations can utilize their IT infrastructure to support their business objectives. Improving efficiencies and introducing new services allows companies across all markets to remain competitive and increase revenue opportunities, commented Gerard Vivier, president of Enterasys Networks Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA)

Enterasys continues to push forward the boundaries of multimedia networking and is working hard to deliver simplified networks that seamlessly support voice, video and data. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao's deployment of our high-availability LAN solution is a great endorsement of our solution capabilities.
