London – 13 June 2002 - elata, the UK-based innovative wireless mobile software specialist, has today announced an agreement with Hutchison 3G UK Ltd (Hutchison 3G). The contract will play an important part in the development of Hutchison 3G’s next generation services. The platform will be deployed first in the UK and then made available in other countries where Hutchison Whampoa has 3G licences.

The elata senses platform will enable Hutchison 3G to intelligently target, personalise and deliver wireless Java applications (J2ME) to customers.

“Wireless Java is a critical step in the creation of new services for 3G. This agreement with Hutchison 3G positions elata as the market leader for Java delivery and download, as well as offering a migration path to support advanced levels of subscriber services management across the range of feature-rich devices.” said Gavin Freed, CEO of elata.

Freed continued: “Hutchison 3G chose elata senses for its Service Delivery Platform because of its ability to dynamically manage and deploy applications and its ability to be customised and intelligently integrated into existing systems.”

Colin Tucker, managing director of Hutchison 3G said, “Our services need to be flexible and responsive in this new market. Choosing a flexible platform that will not only cater for our rollout requirements now, but can evolve and support future multimedia service developments, is crucial.”

3G is a convergence of media, information and telephony which offers people access to information and entertainment services on the move, as well as more flexible working practises. The 3G standard (agreed throughout Europe, Japan, China, and the rest of Asia) is formally known as UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System). It represents a global standard for third generation communication systems and is at the heart of the Hutchison 3G initiative.

Hutchison 3G UK Ltd. (“Hutchison 3G”) holds licence ‘A’ (a third-generation licence), which was issued by the UK government in May 2000. This licence was for the largest block of spectrum auctioned in the UK, as it was set-aside for a new entrant to the market. The licence consists of 15MHz of paired spectrum, and 5MHz of unpaired spectrum.

Hutchison Whampoa Limited holds a 65 per cent stake in Hutchison 3G, the other major shareholders are NTT DoCoMo (20 per cent) KPN Mobile (15 per cent).
