LONDON – June 20th 2002 — Progress Software today announced an ambitious two year plan for building a complete standards-based Web services environment and outlined its roadmap to enable business application developers to support a new Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) using its OpenEdge™ platform (see separate release PR300).

The company will take advantage of closer integration of the messaging middleware of SonicMQ™ and SonicXQ™ Enterprise Service Bus technology from the company's Sonic Software subsidiary, with the Progress OpenEdge development tools to support the exchange of XML and SOAP messages among applications. Progress will deliver a whole range of business process integration, Web services creation and modelling tools which can be accessed by customers of Progress 4GL applications. There are around 2 million Progress users worldwide.

In addition Progress Dynamics™ the new repository-based application development environment, will be enhanced to serve the needs of next-generation, SOA applications.

A Web services toolkit will be released through the Progress Software Developers Network (PSDN) later this year.

“Progress welcomes the opportunities Web services bring to our partners’ distributed applications,” said Simon West, strategic products manager, Progress Software. “The OpenEdge strategy is to support and simplify web services so that they are just another natural part of building integrated, componentised business solutions.”

Progress Software promises an application-server agnostic future for its third party ISVs and end-user
developers as it positions itself to both compete and work alongside IBM, BEA Systems, Oracle, Microsoft and Sun in the fast-moving Web services space.

Frank McIlroy, managing director of Progress Software UK, said: “Most of the application server vendors have a vested interest in encouraging users to deploy applications on their own application servers. At Progress co-existence is the norm. We have a long history of taking the partnership approach and will integrate with other vendors. Progress differentiates itself by its strong alliances with partners.”

Progress’s ISV community (230 in the UK, over 2000 worldwide) has considerable domain expertise and thousands of best-of-breed applications. The SOA product roadmap will help them to deliver more integrated business processes and secure internal systems from the flood of data that Web services could potentially generate.

Mark Gilliland, UK channel sales manager for Progress commented: “Today’s additions to OpenEdge and Dynamics enable our software partners and end-users to co-operate more easily by integrating applications at a modular and granular level. Partners like OpenAccounts and KCS are already collaborating to integrate elements of their respective financial accounting and payroll/HR systems. Initiatives, like Sector Alliance, born in the UK and now adopted globally by Progress, allow a group of partners to act as one, led by Progress as prime contractor, to pursue bigger contracts with organisations that are put-off by their size.“
