Gateway IP Selects Clarent to Expand its Reach in Africa and the Middle East
London, June 24, 2002 - Clarent Corporation, a leading provider of softswitch and enterprise convergence solutions, today announced that Gateway IP, a leading independent international communications company for Africa and the Middle East, has chosen Clarent's VoIP solutions to enhance their portfolio of international voice offerings. This relationship enables Gateway IP to support key customers on the African continent while providing Clarent with the opportunity to increase its market presence in Africa and the Middle East.
Gateway IP is a UK-based telecommunications company focused on the provision of wholesale communications services to emerging markets in Africa and the Middle East. Gateway IP's multi-purpose communications network connects major centres in Africa with communications hubs in the United States and Western Europe, enabling the company to provide low cost international calling services to major international telecommunications carriers, African PTT's, cellular operators and competitive fixed-line carriers.
Customer demand led Gateway IP to evaluate Clarent as a business partner. Clarent VoIP solutions are widely deployed and the company's large, established customer base includes service providers in both the Middle East and Africa. Due to the effectiveness and efficiency of Clarent solutions,
Gateway IP found that potential customers required the company deploy Clarent's standards-based technology prior to partnering with them.
Following a successful demonstration of interoperability between Clarent equipment and the company's existing network, Gateway IP deployed Clarent's integrated softswitch solution. The Clarent platform, which includes Clarent Command CenterTM and Clarent Gatekeeper TM software licenses plus
Clarent's media gateways, enables Gateway IP to collect international telephony minutes in London and distribute voice traffic into and out of locations in the Middle East and Africa. Gateway IP currently uses Clarent equipment to terminate minutes in more than twenty countries. Gateway IP
can also leverage Clarent solutions to increase the quality of calls delivered and introduce more efficient pricing within the African and Middle Eastern regions.
"Deploying Clarent equipment means that we are better positioned to work efficiently with more partners in Africa," said Peter Gbedemah, CEO of Gateway IP. "We expect to be able to deliver better technology, better quality calls and maintain better control of our network, providing us with
an edge over our competitors in this market. Already Clarent has enabled us to develop our local presence in the Southern, Western and Eastern African markets and continue to extend our operations elsewhere."
"Naturally we are delighted that Gateway IP's customers have requested that they select us as a business partner," said Denis Murphy, VP of Sales in EMEA for Clarent. "Our ability to deliver high quality calls and customer service levels enables our partners to focus on building their business
rather than managing their technology. We welcome the opportunity to strengthen our presence in the African and Middle Eastern markets, and remain focused on increasing the overall VoIP opportunity on the African continent."
