Railtrack today unveiled a new system, Sentinel Staffzone, which it will use to help monitor and enforce the safety and competencies of permanent and contract workers.

The ground- breaking software that has been developed specifically for Railtrack will increase visibility of the qualifications and abilities of all trackside workers. The system will ensure that only staff with the necessary safety and competency standards for the task being performed can be booked for work, also checking on their hours worked.

The system was developed with leading workforce consultancy Netengines, and Railtrack’s infrastructure maintenance companies, as well as its labour suppliers and agencies.

Amongst its many applications the software is capable of supervising the hours worked by each member of staff to ensure health and safety regulations are adhered to.

For the infrastructure maintenance companies, Staffzone will help develop their risk management processes and give them the confidence that only accredited workers will be correctly assigned to projects and tasks.


Background to the solution (branded Sentinel Staffzone)

Developed over the last six months, Sentinel Staffzone, the new, innovative, multi-million pound system will allow Railtrack visibility of contract labour working on any assignment, with full visibility of the individual worker’s accredited skills. It is this strategic aim, as well as recommendations from the Cullen Report that has driven Sentinel Staffzone’s development.
The Sentinel system should be reinforced with specific reference to the need to record the total hours that any individual works on the railways, and to ensure that the Sentinel card is clearly “tied” to an individual (para 4.80).

Several thousand personnel are employed by Railtrack to work on track-side activities through a supply chain of seven lead maintenance contractors and many subsidiary contractors and staffing supply agencies. Netengines’ technology will give all employing managers of line-side workers visibility of all track-side workers’ accreditation, working hours and deployment. They will be able to ensure throughout all contractors and staffing agencies that the most suitable trackside workers are selected, working time directives are followed accurately and double bookings are avoided.
