London, United Kingdom, INSERT DATE — The Derwent Information annual study into the number of basic patents filed in the UK during 2001 shows that technology companies dominated innovation.

Derwent Information research reveals that out of the top ten ranked companies, by number of basic* patents filed, six filed a large number in the engineering technology sectors – ranging from basic patents filed in the telephone and data transmission systems, broadcasting, radio and line transmission systems, and digital computers fields.

Leading the field was Nokia Mobile Phones, which rose to the top position in the UK from second in 2000. Nokia filed the majority of its basic patents in the telephone and data transmission, broadcasting, radio and line transmission systems, and digital computers sectors.

Philips Electronics was second in the league table, also filing the majority of its basic patents in the engineering technology field. A large number of its basic patents were filed in the telephone and data transmission and broadcasting, and radio and line transmission systems sectors.

Two companies working in the automotive sector also ranked in the top ten. Delphi Technologies ranked third with filings in the jet engines, fuel supply, automotive electrics, couplings, clutches, brakes, and springs sectors. Rover Group, which held the number one spot in 2000, dropped to fourth place, filing a number of patents in the automotive electrics, suspension, heating, doors, screens and transmission controls fields.

Vincent Cassidy, Derwent Information, Engineering and Technology Director, said: “The interesting trend that our analysis has uncovered that in 2001 companies filing patents in the technology sectors dominated the UK league table. Despite a turbulent year for many hi-tech UK companies it is clear that the big players are still investing in research and development.”

Please note: Statistics are correct according to the Derwent World Patents IndexÒ (Derwent WPI). Only engineering sectors were searched (electronic and electrical, and general mechanical engineering sections of Derwent WPI). Derwent Information judged all results by basic volumes (usually the first filing but always the first publication received by Derwent). Figures were obtained by year according to the publication date. The statistics were compiled between 11th – 19th March, 2002.
