CitizenTV Launched:
Empowers Local Government To Publish High Quality Community Information Via IDTV

New Interactive Digital TV (IDTV) Solution Answers E-Government Objectives For Local Authorities

Connect Internet Solutions, a leading provider of Internet solutions to local government, has announced the launch of CitizenTV, a fully hosted solution for local authorities to realise their e-government objectives.

CitizenTV will empower local authorities to deliver high quality information and services to the community via Interactive Digital TV (IDTV), answering e-government objectives of improved accessibility, social inclusion and choice. The public can access information and interact with a council 24/7 from the convenience of their own home, without the need for a PC.

In addition to fulfilling e-government objectives, CitizenTV will greatly enhance customer service and satisfaction. It will also relieve pressure on other local authority service points.

CitizenTV requires no expert technical resource from the local authority. It is a hosted and managed solution, and the administrative interface is accessed through a standard web browser. To create an IDTV site, information is simply entered into online forms, which automatically produce the pages of the site.

This non-technical approach has the added advantage of facilitating devolved authoring, where departments within a local authority can take responsibility for their own site pages. This in turn makes it easy to keep information up to date and fresh.

The look and feel of the site pages can be configured if desired. The selection of pages is comprehensive, many encouraging interaction with the public. For example, contact us pages, message boards and even a repair reporter for local authority housing tenants.

According to Carole Boardman, Project Manager of Connect, “CitizenTV will help local government promote digital inclusion, reaching a broader spectrum of the public that will include those not currently served by PC based Internet access.”

Connect has extensive experience in developing public sector solutions for IDTV. Acting as Internet architects Connect enabled Knowsley Council to be the first local authority to provide a community information service to its citizens via IDTV.

Connect is working in partnership with Telewest to deliver CitizenTV to the community.
