Introducing state-of-the-art, NEC-manufactured solutions for corporate, small business and individual users

NEC UK has announced the launch of a new Data Storage Division and unveiled a range of floppy disk drives, optical and tape backup solutions, including new two-terabit devices. The company has also announced its channel marketing strategy and future product roadmap.

NEC Corporation has a 40-year pedigree in the design, manufacture and marketing of high performance, high reliability storage products, both in Japan and in other European markets. The company has now established a UK operation to serve the fast-growing storage market here.

Andrew Wyllie, Commercial Manager of NEC’s Business Equipment Division, heading up the new Data Storage operation, says that Britain’s businesses are making ever greater demands on overburdened storage systems:

“Business data storage today is characterised by greater volumes, higher capacity and faster access. Users are constantly demanding the ability to move and handle larger files, often containing high-resolution large graphics and images. Documents that were previously sent as hard copies to users are now sent automatically by email. The total quantity of data handled by businesses is doubling every three years and people want to keep it to hand, storing more and more on their hard drives. 1

“The result of this data explosion is a complete re-defining of the storage issue for the majority of companies and an acute need for robust, reliable storage technology. With our best-of-breed solutions, NEC is ideally placed to address this demand.”

NEC will work alongside the UK’s leading distributors and systems integrators to bring its products to market. The Division has already appointed Micro Peripherals, one of the UK’s top distributors, to supply NEC storage products to retailers and dealers nationwide.

“NEC is one of very few companies manufacturing FDD, tape and optical solutions,” says Wyllie. “The NEC brand is synonymous with the highest standards of quality, performance and reliability. It’s these key qualities that our channel partners will be able to pass on to their own customers.”

NEC’s initial UK focus will be on marketing its new two terabit capacity tape backup products, providing
small and medium enterprises with competitive and seamlessly scalable solutions to meet growing server backup demands. In addition, a range of optical products meets almost every conceivable need for DVD and CD-based archiving and storage solutions.

“Our tape-based solutions make the backup of servers, workgroups and individual PCs reliable, speedy and affordable. Our optical products are aimed at those customers who need to archive large quantities of data and be able to distribute it quickly amongst colleagues and customers,” adds Wyllie.

NEC tape drives use Linear Tape Open (LTO) technology to ensure high-speed backup, accuracy, longevity and reliability. All solutions are fully automated for maximum ease of use.

Not only does NEC automatically manufacture its Autoloader with a barcode reader, but also all units are field upgradeable to allow for future technologies.

NEC’s optical product range is among the most comprehensive in the UK and includes CD-ROM and CD-RW drives; high-performance DVD-ROM drives; combined DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives; and floppy disk drives.

Later this year, NEC plans to roll out several highly-innovative storage solutions targeted at both individual and enterprise users.

NEC already has Mount Rainier-capable optical disk drives, which are easier to use for both data storage and interchange, and will be adding to this range in the near future. Mount Rainier provides OS support for simple dragging and dropping of data to optical disks.

In addition, NEC’s new DVD-RW drives will be among the first in the UK capable of writing both +RW and -RW formats, whilst its CD-RWs offer industry leading 48/24x RW speeds.

Other developments will include 50-Gigabit blue laser solutions for data-intensive users; slimline, combination DVD-RW / CD-RW drives for the laptop market; and Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Storage Area Network (SAN) solutions for large businesses.

“Our current product range puts NEC immediately at the forefront of storage technology in the UK. Our roadmap is designed to take that position one step further and help turn NEC into market leaders, whilst capitalising on our already strong position as Number 3 in the world for FDDs and CD-RWs,” says Wyllie.

All product warranty and support will be carried out by NEC’s own European Technical Centre in Telford.
