Virtual Ethernet Rings - Extending Ethernet LAN Functionality to Carriers’ existing SDH/SONNET WAN, Metro and Transport Infrastructure
Appian Communications, providers of carrier class optical switching technology, today announced a major enhancement to its Optical Services Activation Platform (OSAP), enabling companies to extend Ethernet LAN functionality across their carrier’s broader WAN, metro and transport infrastructure. Appian’s newly released ‘Virtual Ethernet Ring’ technology allows carriers to offer Virtual Private LAN and Private LAN services which extend the simplicity and multipoint connectivity of a customer’s Ethernet LAN across a carrier’s existing metro, regional or long haul SONET/SDH network. Carriers benefit from the revenue and profit potential of next-generation packet services that are flexible, scalable and carrier quality.
With Virtual Ethernet Rings, multiple customer and partner sites can connect to the Virtual Private LAN or Private LAN service through standard Ethernet connections. The result is what appears to be an extension of the company’s LAN, its own private Ethernet domain that may stretch across continents or as far as the carrier’s network allows. The pioneering work on Virtual Ethernet Ring technology has also helped Appian to win top honours at this year’s SuperComm conference in the US, for access networking technology for public networks.

For carriers, Appian also simplifies the migration to these more profitable next generation Ethernet packet services. OSAP allows carriers to deploy Virtual Ethernet Rings over a standard SONET/SDH/DWDM network in parallel with existing voice TDM services, allowing them to offer new Ethernet services without the need for a complete new infrastructure whilst protecting existing revenues from existing services. Native Ethernet mechanisms, including auto discovery, then enable a simple and scalable multipoint (any-to-any) service. Based on the OSAP’s innovative Ethernet over SONET/SDH architecture, the service can be securely dedicated to an individual customer, or it can be efficiently shared across multiple customers, with the ability to explicitly guarantee bandwidth that scales from 1 Mbps to 1 Gbps in 64 Kbps increments.
