ManTech’s Information Capture System allows police to process crime reports efficiently
ManTech Advanced Recognition Limited (MARL), today announced details of its Electronic Police Information Capture System (EPICS), which is designed to enable on the beat police officers to remotely capture and compile reporting information in minutes via a hand held computer or PDA. In line with recent Government plans for high-visibility policing, EPICS will allow police officers to fill-out the required report at the scene of the crime without the immediate need to return to the police station to write up lengthy crime reports. The information can be processed later in the day. This will also enable police forces to minimise the overall paper volume used, and reduce the amount of manual intervention required for report generation and submittal.
EPICS is based on ManTech’s eProForm technology, an electronic information capture system. Electronic forms are created in Extensible Forms Description Language (XFDL), which is the first XML-derived protocol for the purpose of creating, viewing and filling in complex forms.
ManTech’s Group Development and Marketing Director, James Silcock, says, “If high-visibility policing is to work, police officers need to be better equipped with technology that provides them with the ability to report from the scene of an incident or crime. This will not only increase the presence of police officers on the beat, but will allow Police Forces to control their costs by keeping paper flow to an absolute minimum.”
Electronic forms provide greater assistance than paper forms, as validation checks can be performed as the data is being entered, ensuring accuracy. Information can be compiled at speed, as addresses are based on postcodes and automatically created. In addition, look-up tables exist for fast data entry, and police officers are presented with only the relevant information that is required to fill in the form. Consistency across report formats is ensured, so that archived reports viewed by office-based staff will read exactly as they did at the time of original transmission.
As well as crime reporting, EPICS can be utilised for general administration reports, including time sheets, expense reports, and annual leave forms.
