Solution Leverages MPLS to Provide Robust Classes of Service and Scalability for Managing Large Corporate Networks
London - July 15, 2002 - Cable & Wireless (LSE: CW; NYSE: CWP), the global telecommunications group, today announced the availability of Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS, the company's new network-based MPLS IP-VPN solution that provides the flexibility, performance, scalability and quality of service for global enterprises and large corporations as they move toward integrating data, IP and voice communications over a converged network infrastructure.
Now available in 65 countries worldwide with service connectivity in more than 421 cities, Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS is designed to provide enterprises with an extremely robust wide area network solution for connecting partners and customers at fixed and remote locations for Internet, intranet, extranet and e-business applications. Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS gives businesses a feature-rich solution that meets the ever-growing demands of enterprise networks today, especially in light of recent market developments that are requiring businesses to use their networks as a cost-savings asset.
Delivered over a private Cable & Wireless MPLS-enabled IP network with robust Classes of Service, Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS is designed to provide enterprises with a flexible infrastructure to support the migration to a single IP-based communications network. The solution can be used to integrate different traffic types from existing legacy voice and data networks onto one network as enterprises transition to a single, converged IP communications infrastructure. For enterprises with an accelerated need for an all IP-based deployment, Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS can be combined with other Cable & Wireless IP Convergence solutions for a complete IP-based communications infrastructure with Quality of Service from desktop-to-desktop.
Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS is an integral part of the company's IP Convergence solutions, which offer businesses both fully-managed local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) solutions for a single IP-based communications infrastructure for data, video and voice communications from desktop-to-desktop. Through a converged IP network solution businesses can avoid the time and expense of building, maintaining and operating separate data, voice and IP networks while increasing productivity through the deployment of the latest IP-enabled desktop-to-desktop communications applications that improve communications between employees, customers and partners.
Through its strategic relationship with Cisco Systems, Inc., Cable & Wireless has developed solutions based on Cisco technology delivered over a global Cisco Powered Network. With Cisco's V3PN designation, Cable & Wireless' IP-VPN QoS solution is recognized by Cisco as able to support all types of data, voice, video and enhanced multimedia applications. The IP Multiservice VPN designation in the Cisco Powered Network program signifies to Cable & Wireless customers that this solution is ideal for demanding business applications that require high levels of performance such as IP telephony, video conferencing and e-training, and customer service applications which integrate web-based interfaces with real-time voice.
"Cable & Wireless is committed to delivering global solutions that enable enterprises to move to a converged IP-based network infrastructure immediately or at their own pace," said Ivor Kendall, vice president of IP Convergence at Cable & Wireless. "Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS offers the industry's most flexible and robust global IP-VPN solution, capable of managing mission-critical applications in an all IP-based environment for remote access, intranets, extranets and Internet access while accommodating requirements for interoperability with existing legacy networks."
Classes of Service
In contrast to other IP-VPN services that rely on the best effort of the public Internet, Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS is a fully-managed solution delivered over a private global MPLS IP network. With robust Classes of Service options, Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS enables businesses to prioritize mission-critical traffic such as voice, video or financial transactions over non-urgent traffic such as email. Through MPLS routing technology, corporate network managers can group certain types of traffic, so that each has its own Class of Service. By prioritizing traffic, enterprises can safeguard high-priority traffic and low-priority traffic can be assigned to whatever capacity is available, while not having to increase bandwidth purely to support non-critical traffic. Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS offers three Classes of Service:
- Standard: for non-critical traffic such as email or web browsing
- Enhanced: for business-critical traffic such as financial transactions
- Premium: for delay-sensitive applications such as voice and video
Each Class of Service has its own service level targets with respect to availability, latency, jitter and packet loss, giving customers a more robust solution than other services that only deliver "best effort" assurances.
Enhanced Flexibility and Scalability
Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS gives enterprises a new level of flexibility and scalability for deploying and managing corporate networks. While most VPN services rely on the time consuming and complex process of creating pre-configured virtual circuits between each site, Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS' any-to-any connectivity capability automatically sets up pathways to new sites, enabling network managers to easily add new sites and thousands of users. Each site requires one access connection to Cable & Wireless' network without the need for each site to be connected to every other site via separate private leased circuits.
Enterprises can also blend the benefits of MPLS with other networks that utilize the public Internet. Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS' IPSec-enabled gateway facility provides access to the IP-VPN for supplier or customer extranets. The gateway facility also enables enterprises to extend to include very remote sites outside the Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS coverage area, delivering even greater reach for their IP-VPN.
In addition to providing solutions that deliver a single IP-based communications infrastructure for data, voice and video globally, Cable & Wireless also offers enterprises the full range of managed hosting and content delivery services to support their e-business and e-commerce requirements globally. With this broad range of end-to-end solutions, Cable & Wireless is one of the few global service providers that can offer multinational corporations and large enterprises with solutions that help them communicate internally and externally and conduct commerce with customers on a global scale.
Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS is available wherever Cable & Wireless offers dedicated access, remote dial access or frame relay services. For dedicated access, speeds range from 56 Kbps to 155 Mbps.
Management and Reporting Tools
Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS is a fully-managed services for all managed, on net sites. Through a secure website, enterprises have access to network management performance reports. The reporting system provides near real time information at both network and site level for managed sites with the capability to specify the time period of performance. Information provided includes:
- Packet throughput, packet loss, latency, jitter
- Router health statistics
= Service availability
Service Level Agreements
Cable & Wireless IP-VPN QoS is backed by service level agreements encompassing availability, latency, packet loss and jitter performance for each Class of Service, along with guarantees for service provision and assurance performance.
