Slough, UK (July, 2002) – Invensys Powerware, a global leader in uninterruptible power system (UPS) technology and Fujitsu Services, one of Europe’s leading providers of managed services for IT infrastructure, have partnered to supply power protection to meet the needs of the growing demand for reliable power in the retail industry.

“AC and also DC power within a retail environment is becoming increasingly critical with the physical expansion of the retail industries,” said Bryn Morgan, Director of Global Accounts for Invensys Powerware. “There is a diverse set of electrical devices within retail environments which contribute to an ‘unclean’ or unreliable mains supply. Air conditioning, chillers, cookers and other motor-driven devices can produce harmful mains disturbances which affect sensitive electronic devices such as servers and modern EPOS.”

Fujitsu Services analysed and tested the available power protection devices within the industry before selecting and officially approving the Invensys Powerware Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) solutions. Mark Keohane, EMEA Product Marketing Manager at Fujitsu Services, stated, “Our selection was based on the reliability and functionality of the UPS. These devices were subjected to a range of simulated power problems. Our final judgement was based on a combination of best performance to price ratio and we selected the Powerware 5115 and Powerware 3110 UPS products which offered simple, efficient power protection solutions at a cost-effective price.”

Both the PW 5115 and PW 3110 UPSs provide power protection for a broad range of applications, including the Fujitsu TeamPOS2000 Point of Sale terminal. The UPS systems include all necessary power and software connectivity options, to allow complete and easy connection to the point of sales systems

“The software is critical to the overall reliability and operation of the system,” continued Keohane. “By continually monitoring the quality of the incoming power, the software determines the remaining battery runtime and allows the protected equipment to shut down in an orderly fashion, in the event of an extended power outage.” The UPS provides additional protection to eliminate the negative impact of short power disturbances, which would normally force the till to reboot and interrupt transactions taking place.

Invensys Powerware has supplied Fujitsu Services High Performance Systems business (formerly ICL HPS) for a number of years with larger power protection devices. The Fujitsu Services Retail relationship was formed to complement the trend for the growing demand for retail power reliability.
