Comverse, a unit of Comverse Technology, Inc., the world's leading supplier of software and systems enabling network-based multimedia enhanced communications services, today announced that its Intelligent Network (IN)-based Prepaid Solution has secured interoperability approval with Nortel Networks IS-41P, a Nortel Networks proprietary mobile switch IN signaling protocol for CDMA/TDMA carriers. Support of IS-41P provides CDMA/TDMA carriers with improved network efficiency and increased capacity.

The approval, which establishes the interoperability of Comverse's Prepaid Solution with Nortel Networks' Mobile Switching Center (MSC), enables a carrier to cost-effectively manage network resources as its prepaid customer base expands. The signaling protocol both helps to reduce the number of ports a carrier must use and helps to process more calls than other solutions that do not support this signaling protocol.

Comverse's Prepaid Solution received approval from Nortel this month and is the first vendor to establish approval with Nortel Networks for this integration.

"This approval demonstrates Comverse' leadership and commitment to providing CDMA and TDMA carriers with cost-effective, advanced prepaid services, said Howard Wolff, President, Intelligent Networks of Comverse. We are looking forward to the new communications environment that will result from this interoperability."

The Comverse Prepaid Solution is a switch- and network-independent system that supports real-time billing for voice and advanced data services. It combines real-time control and service-use monitoring with a wide selection of charging options. The solution operates in both IN and pre-IN signaling environments and can be migrated seamlessly between the two. Comverse has deployed its prepaid solution, supporting 25 languages, in more than 55 carrier networks (GSM, CDMA and TDMA) and 80 sites in 45 countries.
