Logical UK Ltd, the professional services and IT network integration company, is to co-sponsor a Cranfield School of Management research project into how to increase the likelihood of delivering the business benefits expected of IT projects and whether adaptive project management techniques have been successful.
The ground-breaking research will examine what success factors in typical projects were and how any difficulties encountered were overcome. It will be conducted over the course of six months.
Dr Roger Elvin, of Cranfield’s Information Systems Research Centre , said: “Project management has traditionally concentrated on content delivery, but companies are crying out for a methodology to extend the scope of IT projects to benefits realisation.
“We perceive an analogy with rapid application development, and have tentatively named the new approach ‘adaptive project management’. Our first step will be to see what outcome-oriented techniques are already being used successfully and to learn from them. We will also be examining cases of successful project management, including several of Logical’s customers, in order to incorporate the good practice of sponsors into our findings,” he added.
The project is intended to deliver new insights into how tangible business benefits are actually realised and how organisations can best adopt these benefits once they have been achieved. It will also aim to uncover best practice processes and case studies on successful projects.
Stephen Lawrence, Chief Executive of Logical Group, said: “Logical is continually looking at ways to build upon our best practice for the benefit of our customers. IT business benefits can be enormous, but applying some science to the processes by which IT projects are designed is what most interests us.”
