MCC Appointed to Change the ‘Millennium Bridge’ Attitude to Software Development

Escher Technologies, provider of the Perfect Developer system for writing proven ‘bug-free’ software, has appointed UK based PR agency MCC International to champion ‘verified software development’ as the most efficient way to produce reliable applications. Perfect Developer enables programmers to produce mathematically-proven, bug-free software without knowledge of complex mathematical techniques.

Survey results issued in the summer by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) estimated the annual cost of software bugs to the US economy alone to be at almost $60bn. The survey suggested that up to $22bn of these costs could be eliminated by improved testing to remove software defects. Escher Technologies is working to alleviate the same problem from a new angle, advocating verified software development (mathematically proving that software is bug free and performs as it should), rather than relying solely on testing software to spot bugs.

“The Millennium Bridge met with ridicule because they built an end-product with structural flaws which subsequently had to be ‘patched-up’. Engineering discipline demands that designs are proven correct before construction begins. Why should software engineering be any different?” comments Dr David Crocker, founder and managing director of Escher Technologies. “Perfect Developer turns the most professional way of ensuring software reliability into the cheapest, removing the need for tedious and lengthy testing cycles. Our challenge now, is to change the mindset of both the developer community and software users who have grown to accept faulty products.”

Formally proving software to be bug free has traditionally been a costly and time-consuming chore, requiring engineers with a high level of mathematical knowledge. As such developers have shied away from verification, and opted for the less effective method of testing as the cheaper alternative. Perfect Developer simplifies software verification, removing the need for developers to apply complex mathematical methods.

The gauntlet of changing the industry mindset has been taken up by Winchester based PR agency MCC International. “Escher Technologies is a prime example of where IT PR can be at its most effective,” comments Ian Peel, the director responsible for the Escher account at MCC. “It has a product which offers immense efficiency benefits for many software developers, and which delivers an end result that software buyers are crying out for. The only thing standing in the way of Perfect Developer is the conservative mindset in the software industry. We plan to use a targeted, educational PR campaign to break this, and make Perfect Developer a de facto industry standard.”

About Escher Technologies

Escher Technologies is the producer of Perfect Developer, an application development tool, which simplifies the writing of proven, reliable, bug-free software. Perfect Developer ensures customer satisfaction at the same time as cutting development time by reducing the need for lengthy software testing and debugging cycles.

The tool allows programmers to produce Java or C++ code and to develop and reuse components and subsystems guaranteed to behave according to precise specifications and meet defined user requirements. Developers can precisely express both system specifications and programming code in the same language. Perfect Developer then uses automated reasoning technology to relate the two, providing a proof of correctness and highlighting areas where correctness is in doubt. The tool even provides direct generation of code from system specifications.

Perfect Developer is intended for any organisation that carries out software development to high standards. It is particularly suited to applications where large investments are at risk if the software malfunctions and for safety-critical software development. It is also used by a number of universities and colleges in teaching the principles of sound software development or the Verified Design By Contract method.
