Capscan Ensures Efficiency and Customer Satisfaction for Revolutionary New Online Supermarket, Ocado

Capscan, the supplier of UK and international address management and data-capture software, today announced that Ocado has selected its Matchcode Java Client address management solution to provide rapid online form filling and delivery address verification for its new online supermarket. Ocado is the newest entry in the online grocery market offering the quality and value for which Waitrose is renowned for alongside reliable service and convenient delivery times from a company dedicated to home delivery.. Ocado was launched in January 2002 and was initially confined to a pilot area surrounding Hemel Hempstead. Following a very successful pilot Ocado to date is now available to 1.89 million households across Hertfordshire and London with plans to continue to roll out throughout the year.

Capscan’s Matchcode addressing software is being used to increase the speed and ease of registration, and the user-friendliness of the Ocado website. Research has shown that if a registration process is overly complicated or lengthy, visitors are likely to be put-off and go to a competitor's site. To overcome this difficult issue, Ocado decided that inputting a postcode would be the simplest way of registering customers and improving site usability. Because Matchcode instantly generates the customer’s address from the postcode and pre-fills part of the registration form, the whole process is rapid and hassle-free.

Using the geographical information inherent in a postcode, Matchcode also calculates whether a visitor lives within the current delivery area. If the customer’s home is not covered by the current service, they can register their email address to be alerted once the delivery area has been extended.

In addition, Matchcode plays a vital role in ensuring the accuracy of delivery addresses for Ocado. “We want to provide our customers with a reliable and convenient alternative to supermarket shopping, to do this we have to ensure that the delivery addresses are accurate. The nature of this type of Internet business means that you only get one chance, if one delivery is late or incorrect, the customer will never return,” comments Martin Henery, Technical Architect, Ocado

“If we accept inaccurate delivery addresses,” continues Henery, “we would not only have late or missed deliveries, with all the cost and problems this involves, we then have the responsibility to find out the correct address and re-deliver the goods. The Capscan system removes this problem all together.”

Instead of having to enter a full address themselves, with all the opportunities this presents for mistakes and accuracy, customers are only allowed to enter their postcode. The Capscan software then uses this generate a verified delivery address, ensuring hassle-free deliveries.
