Ocado was launched in January 2002 and was initially confined to a pilot area surrounding Hemel Hempstead. Capscan’s Matchcode addressing software is being used to increase the speed and ease of registration, and the user-friendliness of the Ocado website. Research has shown that if a registration process is overly complicated or lengthy, visitors are likely to be put-off and go to a competitor's site. To overcome this difficult issue, Ocado decided that inputting a postcode would be the simplest way of registering customers and improving site usability. Because Matchcode instantly generates the customer’s address from the postcode and pre-fills part of the registration form, the whole process is rapid and hassle-free.
Using the geographical information inherent in a postcode, Matchcode also calculates whether a visitor lives within the current delivery area. If the customer’s home is not covered by the current service, they can register their email address to be alerted once the delivery area has been extended.
