NEC Computers (UK) introduces the Express5800/320La Linux operated fault tolerant server
RRP From: £17,299
Leading manufacturer, NEC Computers (UK) has announced an important addition to its award winning range of enterprise solutions. Displayed for the first time at Linux Expo UK 2002 in October, the Express5800/320La is one of the only highly affordable servers to use 24/7 fault tolerant technology and is now the first to run under Linux.
“NEC server and storage solutions deliver the capabilities, reliability and scalability required in ever-changing corporate environments,” commented Paul Evans business development director of NEC Computers (UK). “NEC has recognised the increasing demand within the international business community for open computing, and believes that the development of the Linux fault tolerant server series is proof of NEC’s continuing commitment to meeting these needs.”
The Express5800/320La is one of the first highly available affordable servers to use 24/7 fault tolerant technology allowing all processing and I/O commands to run on redundant components in lockstep. The redundant components in each module process identical data at the same time. In the event of a hardware failure or error, the defective module is instantly isolated without losing memory state or processing instructions. The end result is a far higher level of system integrity and stability when compared to non-fault-tolerant systems.
The NEC software engineering team developed Linux for the NEC Express 5800/320La fault tolerant server. Using Red Hat Linux 7.1 as a base, significant changes have been made to the kernel, device drivers, storage management, memory management and NEC’s ESMPRO systems management. These enhancements enable Linux to support the fault tolerant features of the hardware platform such as lockstep processors, PCI bus handling interrupts and the hot swapping of the motherboard modules.
Advanced monitoring availability, the modular design, and on-line testing facility allow NEC to supply ease-of use, installation, and maintenance time-savings. These features also enable the 320La to provide reduced repair and maintenance costs, remote monitoring and repair capabilities and problem identification and resolution, all without a system shutdown.
The NEC Express5800/320La comes with a three years on-site warranty and optional warranty extensions are available at an additional cost.
The Express5800 server range is one of the most complete and comprehensive on the market today. Ranging from printer and file sharing to centralized data warehousing and clustered transactional solutions, Express5800 servers deliver superior performance and scalability with outstanding availability and comprehensive management tools.
