Vodafone is to deploy carrier-grade SMS Routers from Telsis at the core of its UK network to intelligently handle text messages sent by Vodafone users, it is announced today.

The Telsis technology will balance loads across Vodafone’s multiple SMSCs, enabling revenue from mass SMS events such as voting to grow without affecting person-to-person text messaging.

The deployment helps ensure that Vodafone’s existing SMS infrastructure is more efficiently exploited, boosting capacity without requiring further costly SMSCs. Network resilience is also improved by automatic load re-balancing should one or more SMSCs become unavailable.

Running on Telsis world-leading carrier-grade infrastructure platforms that have set benchmarks for performance, price and the smallest ever footprint, the Vodafone solution uses routing techniques similar to those already well proven for voice telephony.

Distributed SMS Routers, controlled by a central SMS Service Control Point (SMS SCP), ensure smooth loading across multiple existing SMSCs. Easy programmability means that routing rules can be quickly established.

Says Vodafone’s business development director John Smith: “The first text message was sent on the Vodafone UK network in 1992 and we now handle over 10 million a day. Events such as the World Cup and TV programmes like Big Brother put an extra load on our infrastructure. The Telsis technology will help us to handle those peaks without affecting normal SMS traffic. But this is more than just a capacity issue.

“We agree with Telsis that SMS has substantial untapped potential. This new routing technology will let us unlock that promise, enabling us to launch a whole range of exciting new SMS services while at the same time protecting quality of service for existing users.”

With its headquarters, research and production site in the UK, Telsis ( has sales and support operations in France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain, Singapore and Australia. The company offers a range of carrier-grade infrastructure platforms, including IN service control points, switches, advanced IVR solutions and intelligent SMS Routers, that support a wide variety of innovative value-added voice and text services. Telsis products are in use with major network operators around the world.
