mBlox, the leading European SMS messaging provider to suppliers of mobile applications and services has acquired Aspiro’s SMS messaging business.

The acquisition means that mBlox takes over Aspiro’s approximately 40 messaging customers in Europe, Africa and Middle East. The customer base has a total volume of about 3 million messages per month. The deal involves a revenue-share relationship, which will improve Aspiro’s net margins and enhance the partnership between the companies.

mBlox makes it possible for its customers, mainly media companies, marketers and suppliers of mobile services, to time- and cost-effectively launch mobile services at a pan-European scale without the need for the customers to integrate to each specific network. mBlox thereby fulfils a need in the value chain between operators and providers of wireless services.

The deal follows hard on mBlox’s announced purchase of Red Message’s SMS business earlier in the week.

Andrew Bud, mBlox CEO said β€œWith the acquisition of Aspiro’s SMS business, we have taken another step along the path of consolidating this industry. Scale and focus will shape the winners in the sector, and the acquisition of Aspiro’s important portfolio of customers will give us increased client service scale and traffic volumes. We believe we shall undertake more such deals in the future.”

Hakan Person, CEO Aspiro said β€œAs we now focus on our core competence, wireless applications, we are very satisfied that our customers within the SMS messaging area can continue to have a high grade service via mBlox. With their high traffic volumes and strongly focused business model mBlox is very well positioned to offer competitive prices and innovative products.”

Karl-Johan Nybell, heading Product Management at Tele2, Sweden’s number two mobile operator, commented on the deal β€œFrom Tele2’s side we welcome the consolidation in the wireless segment. It has to be simpler, cheaper and quicker for companies to reach mobile subscribers all over Europe with new services and applications. We therefore see that there is a great need for strong players focused at messaging, with a broad geographic coverage and a cost effective infrastructure. The consolidation will probably lead to increased traffic volumes and an increased number of wireless service on the market.”

The agreement means that AspiroΒ΄s customers will receive the same services as today but with mBlox as a supplier instead of Aspiro. They will also gain access to mBlox’s full range of products, such as Intellisend? for outbound SMS messages, BigTxt? for incoming messages and Premium SMS, the growing standard for micropayments that mBlox has launched in most of the main markets in Europe.

The agreement is in force and the migration of Aspiro’s customers to mBlox technical platform will be ready no later than the end of February 2002.

ENDS.
