The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation has become the latest good cause to receive donations via CharityPay, an online payment service developed by Alliance & Leicester's commercial banking arm Girobank.

Anyone with a debit or credit card and access to the internet can now make donations to the Liverpool-based charity at in a matter of seconds, 24 hours a day. They do not need an online bank account.

The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is named after the popular TV personality, who died of the disease in 1994. The Foundation's work includes medical research into the causes and treatment of lung cancer, as well as care and support for sufferers.

It also runs programmes discouraging children from taking up smoking and services for adults who wish to quit.

Janine Drew, Fundraising Manager at the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, said: "A growing number of people are getting used to the idea of how quick, simple and secure it is to pay their bills over the internet - we are hoping they will be equally comfortable supporting our work in the same way. With CharityPay, it couldn't be simpler."

Russell Carter, Senior Marketing Manager at Girobank, said: "CharityPay is a very quick and easy way for anyone with internet access to help worthwhile causes.

"It is also a very simple solution for charities wishing to receive donations through the internet. There are none of the costs and delays associated with putting in your own online payment systems - little more than a link from their own website to CharityPay is needed before they can begin accepting money this way."

CharityPay uses the same secure, 128-bit encryption technology as the Girobank BillPay service at BillPay has more than 115,000 registered users, who are able to make payments to almost 200 organisations.

Girobank recently launched another service, BillPayPLUS. This enables organisations to use the proven technology behind BillPay and CharityPay to host an own-branded payment service on their websites.
