The Brief

Emerson Energy Systems is a global supplier of technologically advanced telecom energy solutions, providing power supply and network energy management to telecommunication companies in over 100 countries worldwide. Formerly Ericsson Energy Systems, the company was acquired by the Emerson Corporation and in April 2000 and joined 21 other Emerson divisions in the Emerson Network Power group.

Following the acquisition, Emerson required a new EDI system to replace the original infrastructure, which remained the property of Ericsson when the company was sold. A robust EDI system that could be implemented quickly was vital for Emerson in order to support and manage its internal business processes and to enable the company to start trading electronically with its telecom operator customer base and suppliers across the world.

The Solution

The options open to Emerson were to either buy a new EDI solution to support the company’s order and invoice system, or to outsource this business process function to an external specialist. To purchase and install a new EDI solution would have taken between 6-9 months, which was too long for Emerson to be without a fully operational system. Emerson chose to adopt an outsourcing solution and turned to Sterling Commerce and its Sterling Managed Services. Sterling Commerce provided a dedicated and experienced team of outsourcing specialists to project manage the migration of the old EDI system and to create a new stable and secure eBusiness infrastructure that now provides Emerson’s customers and suppliers with access to extensive order and invoice integration 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Another key factor in the decision making process was that the existing Ericsson EDI infrastructure ran on Sterling Gentran Server, which is at the core of the Sterling Managed Services. This provided Emerson with an added confidence that the functionality and capabilities of their system would be fully supported by the Sterling Commerce outsourcing solution. This also afforded the telecoms energy specialist a fast, smooth and seamless migration path from its old system to the new.

The Result

Emerson now has a reliable and secure electronic trading network that is maintained by the Sterling Managed Services team of experts, with ongoing consultancy provided as and when new business partners join the electronic trading network. The system can be scaled up or down to reflect the amount of traffic using the network, a factor that was integral for Emerson to support the company’s plans to expand into the Asian and US telecoms energy markets.
