Solution enables secure use of the mainframe for today's applications and operating systems

December 17, 2002 CONSUL risk management, a worldwide IT security software provider specialising in audit and administration solutions, today announced the launch of Consul/zSecure version 1.4, a comprehensive security management solution for mainframe environments. This version of the suite, which contains CONSUL's years of mainframe expertise, continues the product's evolution to covering non-traditional uses of the mainframe for today's business.

Consul/zSecure, with its administration and auditing capabilities, is the flagship product of the Consul/zSecure Pro Suite. This comprehensive suite anticipates the security needs administrators have from central and decentral administration to auditing and policy compliance. Over 350 customers worldwide rely on CONSUL's solutions daily to maintain their most crucial IT asset the mainframe. With mainframes also increasingly being used for non-traditional applications, companies turn to CONSUL to ensure that the expected security level can be maintained.

Consul/zSecure 1.4 takes us a big step further with mainframe management, says Jean Slapak, Information Security Administrator of Algemeen Burgelijk Pensioenfonds (ABP). We experienced absolutely no problems with the installation and Consul/zSecure will eventually make all in-house made products for RACF redundant. For us, this means a significant efficiency and security improvement.

Consul/zSecure 1.4 makes the mainframe secure for today's needs, states Koen Bouwers, CEO of CONSUL risk management. It is increasingly common that additional systems like UNIX, Linux, Websphere and VM operate on the mainframe. To securely innovate the mainframe, customers look to our solutions to anticipate and manage new security issues.

Security professionals are busier than ever dealing with increasingly open networks and threats from inside and outside the organisation. Consul/zSecure shrinks the time demands of mainframe security administration and decreases costs by more than 50 percent versus native RACF by streamlining laborious tasks. With Consul/zSecure, the cost of measuring and auditing events is lowered, current security weaknesses are pinpointed and the chance of costly security breaches occurring is decreased. Consul/zSecure 1.4 takes full advantage of the enhancements in IBM's z/OS 1.4, including support for automated management of UNIX UID and GID values, enterprise identity mapping and extensive z/VM support. The new version is optimized for IBM's new z/OS 1.4, but also supports OS/390, z/OS, VM/ESA and z/VM.

Beyond administration and auditing, the Consul/zSecure Pro Suite also addresses other security priorities through additional modules. For example, Consul/zHelp frees up mainframe administrators to concentrate on high-level and critical activity by enabling users to handle the routine tasks of password resets on their own. To reset passwords, Consul/zHelp users answer personalised questions through a web browser, employing a user-friendly procedure that saves considerable time for the helpdesk.

Another module, Consul/zLock, acts as a security proofreader, ensuring that all RACF commands are compliant with security policies before they are executed. Consul/zLock can also replace an incorrect command with a correct one, in contrast with other products that alert only after an error is made.

zSecure 1.4 is available immediately.
