Sony Logistics will use Sterling Integrator
to enhance capabilities of its existing logistics information hubs
London, 22nd January 2002 – Sterling Commerce today announced that Tokyo-based Sony Logistics Corporation, which is responsible for all aspects of the Sony group logistics worldwide, will implement its strategic integration platform, Sterling Integrator. With Sterling Integrator, Sony Logistics plans to improve the efficiency of its value-chain by integrating complicated business processes and sharing the information effectively throughout its Sony group’s business units and its worldwide trading community of customers, suppliers, 3PL, and carriers.
Sterling Integrator was recently launched across EMEA as the industry’s first integration platform using native J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition) and utilising business process modeling language (BPML). BPML is advocated by the Business Process Management Initiative (BPMI.org), and provides both enterprise applications (EAI) and business-to-business (B2B) integration capabilities.
Developing systems with Sterling Integrator, companies are able to integrate internal applications integration as well as support for both real-time and legacy batch-oriented business-to-business interactions, creating a complete, streamlined foundation for businesses to automate and manage e-business processes including human interactive processes such as approval, exception, and error processes.
Sony Logistics operates and manages Sony Corporation and its group companies’ logistics network on a global basis. Using Sterling Integrator, Sony Logistics will be able to tie its trading partners’ systems together. Sterling Integrator will enhance Sony’s global logistics network system – “E-Log” – through enhancement capabilities. This will provide the ability to optimise the global logistics processes and strengthen services. “E-Log” provides optimum logistics information system solutions to Sony group companies and its trading partners through capabilities such as real-time information integration with 3PL providing cargo tracking information to consignors.
Sterling Integrator will allow Sony Logistics to integrate EDI, SAP R/3, and Internet-based transactions with internal applications on a single platform. Additionally, the platform’s ability to e-enable business processes and logistics information capabilities will help Sony Logistics improve the visibility of information sharing and to create a flexible, adaptive supply chain to measure against any market changes.
“Flexibility and speed are the keys to succeed. With Sterling Integrator we are trying to create the global common information system platform which delivers such capabilities,” said Mr. Keiichi Yumita, general manager in charge of Systems Development, Sony Logistics. “To be competitive, enterprises need to reexamine their organisation and business processes globally. In addition, enterprises require integrating business processes internally and externally, and flexibility of changing processes to fit the market needs quickly. Sterling Commerce’s solution was one of the best fits for our system to integrate various applications within the enterprise and trading partners.”
“Sony Logistics’ selection of Sterling Integrator is an excellent example of how we are helping our customers leverage and extend their current system investments using efficient system development architecture and to evolve toward greater efficiencies of system development, shorter cycle times and increased customer service,” said Sam Starr, chief executive officer, Sterling Commerce. “With Sterling Integrator, integrating a variety of internal and external processes through a standards-based architecture provides a streamlined and cost-effective solution allowing our customers to realise substantial returns on investment.”
Sterling Commerce EMEA recently announced it had signed up two global manufacturers to Sterling Integrator: Lhoist (Belgium-based lime and dolomite producer); and Leica Microsystems (German electrical manufacturer and supplier of high precision optical solutions). Sterling Commerce is already conducting other successful pilots across the EMEA region with a range of market-leading organisations in the manufacturing, retail and financial services industries and expects to announce a host of new contract wins in the coming months.
