The Alliance & Leicester BillPay web service at is a quick and easy way to avoid a 5.0 per cent surcharge that will be levied on Friday 28 February by the Inland Revenue on overdue tax payments.

Users do not need an online bank account - just internet access and a debit card. The BillPay service is free and registration takes only a few moments.

Self-assessment tax totalling £4.9 million was paid via on 31 January. Any tax not paid before 31 January has automatically been attracting interest at the Inland Revenue's current APR of 6.5 per cent.

In addition, the 5.0 per cent surcharge will be levied on any sums still not paid by 28 February. The Inland Revenue is expected to announce this week how many taxpayers failed to return their self-assessment form and pay any tax due before 31 January's deadline.

BillPay is operated by Girobank, Alliance & Leicester's commercial banking arm.

"Darren Whiteley, Product Manager for Girobank Bill Payments, said: "A growing number of taxpayers are recognising that BillPay is a very simple way to pay their tax and avoid late payment penalties - the £4.9 million paid on 31 January this year was almost four times greater than was received on the same day last year."
