“Identity theft” – impersonating someone to steal information or resources – is a huge and growing problem on the Internet. Many companies don’t dare to put valuable material on their websites because they can’t afford to protect it. Now Desktop Guardian provides a powerful defence against identity thieves with Identrica(TM), a unique system offering high-grade user authentication at a sensible price.

“Identrica is an enabling technology,” says John Brand, managing director of Desktop Guardian. “For the first time website owners can achieve a realistic level of security without spending a fortune on hardware and administration – that means they can save money by using the web efficiently to share information and resources with their staff and partners.“

Identrica(TM) provides strong, two-factor authentication using a standard mobile phone to replace smartcards, tokens, biometrics or digital certificates. It is inexpensive, easy to administer and popular with users.

When a user logs on to a protected website, after providing the correct password they are asked to make a 5-second call to an Identrica(TM) number - using their registered mobile phone. The call is not answered and costs the user nothing. If the Identrica(TM) server receives the call within the permitted time, the user is allowed access to the website: if not, access is refused.

Desktop Guardian provides Identrica(TM) as a service, which eliminates capital costs and has minimal implementation and administration overheads. A standalone version is also available for organisations which need to keep authentication in-house.
