Cable & Wireless, the global telecommunications group, was named 'Best
Carrier' at the 5th annual UK Internet Industry Awards ? the ISPAs ? for
the quality, breadth and depth of its Internet transit backbone and
supporting services.

An independent panel of judges, including NTL, IDC, Which?, mm02, IBM and
Tarifica, selected Cable & Wireless for its good transit times, global
reach, operation of its own network and competitive pricing for national
transit. Others shortlisted for the award were Energis, Easynet, MediaWays
and Neos Networks.

"This award from our peers and partners in the industry demonstrates that
the quality and breadth of our services are respected by those who use it
most ? and as such, there can be no higher recognition," said Andrew
Sangster, senior vice president, Service Providers UK, Cable & Wireless.
"It is because of these qualities that we can offer our customers the
end-to-end service level agreements they are seeking, right the way through
from their desktops to our data centres."

In addition to the award, Cable & Wireless' long-running support of
Childnet International was recognised when the children's internet charity
picked up the special ISPA Internet Watch Foundation Award for developments
in online safety. Childnet International received the award in recognition
of their internet safety initiative, 'Kidsmart'. The programme uses
classroom activity plans, leaflets, posters and an interactive website to
communicate the importance of online safety to children, parents and
teachers. In receiving the award, Nigel Williams, chief executive at

Childnet International thanked the programme's sponsors - Cable & Wireless
and the Department for Education and Skills - for their ongoing support.

The ISPAs are unique in that they are awarded to people and organisations
in the industry by their peers and reflect the broad nature of the service
provider sector. Formed in 1995 as the trade association to represent ISPs
in the UK, the Internet Service Providers Association has been organising
the UK Internet Industry Awards since 1999 to herald the best of the
Internet and application service providers industry and to celebrate
innovation and best practice.

This is the second consecutive year that Cable & Wireless has been
recognised by the ISPA ? it took 'Best Pan-European ISP' at last year's
