The Brief

Cims Limited, is a leading provider of marketing strategy, loyalty & support programs, and credit card protection services for European financial institutions. Across Europe an estimated 16.3 million banking customers use Cims-designed checking accounts and membership products. Sterling Commerce was approached by Cims to establish a single communications portal to receive all new account application information directly from its network of 50 partner banks across 22 countries in Europe.

The Business Pain

Initially it was proposed that each bank in the Cims network would transfer new account application information to the local country branch, where this data would then be passed on to the UK via the Cims WAN. However, the requirements for central control and the need to provide flexible communication channels to their trading partner community meant Cims had to look for an alternative that could meet their customer’s specific needs.

The Solution

Sterling Commerce recommended its Connect:Enterprise® integration solution, to enable Cims to transfer high volumes of secure financial and personnel data from its various banking customers across Europe via the internet, to Cims head office in the UK. In addition the business integration solution provided management and communication services and an audit trail to enable the tracking of data movement throughout the enterprise.

Connect:Enterprise provides secure collection and distribution of data through open communication protocols such as FTP, HTTP, OFTP, Async and Bisync. It stores data in a secure repository and provides internet-strength cryptography and authentication between the Cims UK head office and 50 European financial institutions. The solution manages the flow of information throughout business processes, and extends legacy systems to internet applications and users securely and reliably.

The Result

With the implementation of the Sterling Commerce integration solution Cims has gained a robust, highly intelligent file transfer system that satisfies the strict security demands required for transferring financial data and confidential information between its complex financial community network across Europe.

In addition it has guaranteed end-to-end transmission data security, and the capability to archive and track all data transfers, enabling companies to retransmit and audit communications - from anywhere within the European network of financial institutions.

Why Sterling?

Sterling Commerce successfully provided Cims with a flexible, secure, reliable integration system with multi-protocol capabilities to create a E-Business communications infrastructure for its pan-European client base which optimises efficiency and reduces costs.

David Prowen-King, Strategic Network Analyst at Cims said: “The key driver for the Cims implementation of Sterling Commerce’s integration system was our need to provide a secure platform on which to communicate business information securely and reliably within and between our European financial customers. With this installation we are satisfied we have achieved a seamless and secure information exchange that will accommodate our business partners and all of the data communication requirements.”
