Amidst an imminent war with Iraq, UK Internet users are increasingly turning to the web to voice their protest, reports Hitwise - global leader in real-time Internet intelligence.

The ‘Stop The War Coalition’ website, http://www.stopwar.org.uk has experienced a 300% rise in market share and risen by over 700 ranking places amongst all Internet sites in the last two days. As the organization prepares for another mass demonstration in London this weekend, the British public has shown their deep concern for the situation in Iraq by using the Internet to find like-minded opinion and to find out information about the forthcoming protest march.

Search engines have been used extensively to find sites protesting the war in Iraq over the past few weeks. www.stopwar.org.uk received 38% of its traffic from search engines, with
http://www.google.com and www.google.co.uk collectively providing 17% of referrals. This would have been a direct result of www.stopwar.org.uk being the highest returned site under the search term ‘stop war’ on both Google.com and Google UK.

News sites also figured highly with 6.13% of traffic to www.stopwar.org.uk coming from the link provided on the BBC News website.

As a whole, the British public is looking at more news sites, with the News category increasing its share of all UK visits by 7% in the last week.
