Survey Reveals Software Providers Are Losing Out To Piracy

Forty three percent of software publishers do not protect their software against unauthorised use, according to a recent survey of more than 250 UK software development companies conducted by Rainbow Technologies (Nasdaq: RNBO), a leading provider of products and solutions that make security simple for the web, the network and digital content.

Of the 57 percent of software developing companies that do protect their software, the majority (69 percent) use software-based protection, with only 11 percent opting for more powerful hardware protection. In addition, over half of the companies surveyed that do protect their software (54 percent) develop their own protection method instead of using proven solutions from specialist vendors.

"With so much attention being paid to the issue of software piracy, it surprises me that so many software developers still fail to protect their digital assets," commented Gary Clark, vice president of sales and marketing for EMEA at Rainbow Technologies. "Without adequate protection against piracy, companies open themselves up to a barrage of threats, sacrificing not only their intellectual copyright and potential revenue streams, but also their reputation."

Software developers have a number of choices available to secure their applications from both innocent and malicious piracy. Today's tools exist to provide individual, tailor-made protection for the developer. Hardware tokens, software tools and licence management applications can offer usage-based models to network licences, allowing programme access for a predetermined length of time, access to specific functions of an application or usage on a particular server only. Implementing such licencing tools ensures that providers can distribute applications with confidence knowing that every copy in use has been paid for.
