Benjys Sandwiches, London’s fast-growing sandwich chain has turned to
Microsoft .NET technology to deliver a low-cost alternative to the traditional
EPOS system: the Mobile Stock Minder.
Designed by London-based software developers Information Systems Associates Ltd, the Mobile Stock Minder enables the stock levels of over 350 lines to be recorded on Microsoft® Windows® Powered Pocket PC handheld devices by individual store managers in each of Benjys 50 outlets. The information is then sent by GPRS connection to Benjys central system. Stock replacement orders for each outlet are generated automatically against centrally-calculated sales predictions.
The Mobile Stock Minder is not only designed to eliminate stock-outs and manage wastage, but to give an overview of the relative performance of different outlets. The system replaces Benjys current paper-based telephone ordering system, which is labour-intensive, error-prone and inhibits the rapid expansion of the chain.
“The Mobile Stock Minder will give Benjys many of the essential benefits of a traditional EPOS system, without the wires and at a fraction of the cost,” said Information System’s Managing Director Thomas Payne. "Microsoft .NET technology has allowed us to design an end- to-end system which can be quickly developed to respond to our clients’ ever-growing need for improved business processes."
Emma Rickwood, Benjys Commercial Director said: " We believe that a handheld device with this uniquely tailored software will allow us to manage stock levels, product wastage and place replenishment orders. This in turn will improve our supply chain efficiencies. The output clearly for us is to have the right range, in the right place at the right time."
The Mobile Stock Minder system is an end-to-end .NET solution. The handheld components are built using both the Microsoft® .NET Compact Framework and web services for data communication or synchronisation. Benjys retail management system is a .NET Windows application that uses web services to access its data. The back end data repository is a SQL database (hosted by Information Systems for Benjys). ASP.NET is used to create the web services that wrap the SQL data.
“The Mobile Stock Minder is a great example of a solution that will add greatly to the productivity of business customers,” said Robbie Wright, Director, Mobile Devices Marketing Group, Microsoft, EMEA. “By leveraging the potential of .NET and Microsoft® Windows® Powered Pocket PC, Information Systems have been able to deliver real results.”
