New Power over Ethernet Technology Slashes Installation
Costs of Wireless LANs by 50%
Igal Rotem, CEO of PowerDsine, claims that Power over Ethernet technology,
which allows power and data to be delivered over the LAN, is set to reduce
the cost of installing a Wireless LAN by up to 50%. This savings is
possible because the network engineer installing the wireless hub can also
deliver power to the hub through the standard Ethernet infrastructure,
removing the need for the services of an electrical engineer to connect the
hub to a separate electrical circuit and install additional AC power points.
This view is echoed by Richard Webb, senior analyst for Wireless LANs at
Infonetics Research: "Power over Ethernet is an unsung hero of the growing
wireless LAN market in particular; as power is supplied over the existing
LAN data cabling system, this improves the range of installation locations for
such devices; because of this, enterprise users are able to deploy wi-fi access
points with much greater flexibility and also achieve lower installation costs; without it,
your wireless LAN is not truly wireless."
According to Rotem, "The services of a qualified electrician can cost as
much as £200 per hub and can delay the time and cost of completing a
Wireless LAN project. The additional costs of a Power over Ethernet mid-span
can be recuperated immediately by the savings on installation costs and
increased flexibility on the location of the wireless hub".
Because of the huge cost savings available wireless vendors such as Proxim
and Symbol are already shipping PowerDsine's Power over LAN solutions as
well as resellers specialising in the wireless and VoIP arena.
