IMHOTEK RELEASES IXP FOR THE NOKIA COMMUNICATOR 9210i
Users Of Nokia’s Business-Orientated Handset Can Save Up To 90% On Data
Transfers

Oxfordshire, April 15th: Imhotek Limited, a privately owned company
specialising in providing messaging and knowledge management consultancy
services and products, has announced the release of its Imhotek X-ccelerator
Program (IXP) for Nokia’s 9210i Communicator mobile phone. IXP enables users
of POP/IMAP and SMTP mail services to significantly reduce the size of data
sent and received over GPRS and GSM.

"The 9210i is aimed squarely at business users who need access to company
networks and the Internet while on the move," says Steve Allam, Technical
Director at Imhotek. "By using IXP, 9210i owners can significantly reduce
the cost of sharing data between the office and other mobile devices.”

IXP works in two parts. A server component is installed on a network with
good links to mail servers. Companies can run their own IXP server (by
purchasing an IXP server license) or use an Imhotek-hosted server for a
monthly subscription. The IXP client is then installed on the 9210i,
alongside its e-mail client. It is configured with the location of the IXP
server, a username and password and the location of the user¹s e-mail
servers. The user's e-mail client is then re-configured to use the IXP
client as a pseudo server. When the user attempts to connect to their e-mail
server, the IXP client connects to the IXP server, which in turn connects to
the user's e-mail server. IXP can now intercept all traffic between client
and server for compression and optimisation.

"Whether users have a separate GPRS subscription or use a standard GSM
network, data transfer using mobile networks is expensive compared to
standard desktop based methods," adds Allam. "IXP is already available for
Windows, Linux and Pocket PC based systems. By developing IXP for mobile
phones, IT departments can ensure that all wireless data transfers across an
organisation will be optimised."

Running a Symbian operating system, the dual band 9210i is perhaps the first
mobile phone that offers remote business users a real alternative to the
laptop and phone socket. Its IPSec VPN client allows mobile corporate users
to establish secure, reliable trusted connections from the 9210i directly to
their corporate Intranets and critical resources.

“This particular platform has been widely requested by existing users of our
popular Symbian port of the VNC remote management application.” says Allam.

With 40mb memory on board, the 9210i offers a comprehensive suite of
Microsoft compatible software including advanced messaging services (SMS,
fax, e-mail), Internet (web and WAP), Office compatibility (word processor,
spreadsheet, presentation viewer and file manager) and extras including
RealOne Player and digital imaging facilities. According to Allam, with
specifications like these, the 9210i offers a real alternative to mobile
workers who want access to critical information such as e-mail and documents
on corporate networks, but don’t want the bulkiness of a laptop or indeed
the reliance on the availability of a phone socket.

“The popularity of wireless working and connectivity is only going to
increase. However, IT managers and private users have to be prepared for
increased costs as wireless data sharing becomes more common. However, on a
standard GSM mobile link, IXP almost doubles the speed at which data is sent
and received, meaning the user spends less time connected," concludes Allam.
"For GPRS, where the user is billed per byte of data transmitted, IXP
compressed data by up to 90 percent. The business case is obvious."

About IXP:

Written in Java using J2ME, IXP works with all popular mail clients and
bespoke applications. The server component can run on both Windows and
Linux-based servers. The IXP client is currently available for clients
running Windows, Linux, Symbian, PalmOS and PocketPC operating systems. IXP
is available by calling Imhotek on +44 (0) 870 741 1212. A datasheet
containing detailed information on IXP is available in pdf format from
www.imhotek.com in the download section.
