Company to increase staff numbers by 20 per cent at IPWireless Technical Centre in UK -- IPWireless also now in trials with ten of top 20 mobile operators
Malmesbury UK.—April 17, 2003—IPWireless, Inc., the world leader in commercial mobile broadband deployments, today announced that it has appointed Jack Scanlon, a global communications industry leader, to serve on the IPWireless board of directors. Bolstered by customer commitments to launch a number of nationwide networks, the company is strongly positioned for exponential growth this year. In addition, in response to this growing worldwide demand from operators, IPWireless also announced today the launch of an expanded technical centre in the United Kingdom and will immediately grow its research and development staff by more than 20 per cent.
“I’ve been involved in this industry for a number of years, and I have yet to see a private company with as much potential to dramatically impact the global telecommunications landscape as IPWireless,” said Scanlon. “Having participated in several technology breakthroughs during my career at AT&T, Bell Labs, and Motorola, I am certain that IPWireless will join this elite group and become a household name. IPWireless mobile broadband is a ‘leap technology’ that will touch the lives of everyone, everywhere.”
As IPWireless’ newest board member, Scanlon brings a wealth of experience in a career that has spanned four decades, most recently as CEO and vice chairman of Asia Global Crossing. He is also an advisor to Clarity Partners LLP, a leading venture capital firm based in Los Angeles. Before becoming the founding CEO of Asia Global Crossing when it was formed as a partnership with Microsoft and Softbank, Scanlon was also the first CEO of Global Crossing. Prior, he was president and general manager of Motorola’s Cellular Networks and Space Sector. Under his leadership, the cellular infrastructure segment alone grew from $500 million in four countries to $5.5 billion in more than 90 countries.
Scanlon has served on numerous corporate boards, is president emeritus of Cornell University’s Engineering Board, a senior member of the IEEE, and a former member of the National Academy of Sciences. He also serves on the advisory board of Outward Bound. He holds six patents in computing and communications and received a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto and an M.S. in electrical engineering from Cornell University.
“I have had the privilege of working with Jack during my career at Motorola and am honored to be reunited with him again,” said Chris Gilbert, CEO, IPWireless. “In a word, Jack is brilliant. To have him as a resource and to tap into his network will prove invaluable for IPWireless as we transition the company from a relatively small private entity into a major worldwide player.”
Proof Positive – IPWireless Leads the Market
As testimony to the growing universal interest in mobile broadband, IPWireless has now entered into trials with ten of the top twenty mobile operators in the world and is engaged with several other tier-one service providers. In December, Walker Wireless announced plans to extend its IPWireless™ network across all of New Zealand. IPWireless expects at least three more customers to commit to national networks in the first half of the year. With a litany of recent accomplishments including new customers, partners and breakthrough product advances, IPWireless has fortified its position as the market leader in delivering mobile broadband to the masses.
Next-Generation Wireless Network Enables Mobile Computing Everywhere
The IPWireless end-to-end network solution is the first on the market that complies with the internationally recognized UMTS TD-CDMA (TDD) standard. With a number of leading 3G Project Partnership (3GPP) global vendors having already announced plans for products based on the TDD standard, operators can more quickly benefit from the economies of scale and multi-vendor innovation that comes with an established standard. Available today for operation in several licensed bands, the IPWireless product line includes a complete network infrastructure solution, pocket-sized wireless desktop modems, and PC cards (PCMCIA) for laptops and PDAs. The low-cost IPWireless broadband modem and card provide residential and business customers with instantaneous, “plug-and-play” Internet access. Additionally, the IPWireless network solution gives users the complete portability, mobility and freedom of a wireless Internet connection at higher speeds than alternative broadband offerings.
