London 24 April 2003 – Sterling Commerce, leading provider of business integration solutions, has added SITA, the world’s leading airline industry applications provider, to its growing list of European customers. SITA will use Sterling Integrator™ to enhance the web capabilities of its existing airline catering industry portal that ensures in-flight food services are delivered in a more efficient and cost-effective manner, by providing airlines and caterers with online access to timely information.

SITA provides airlines, airports, and aerospace companies, as well as logistics organisations and governments, with the most extensive portfolio of managed data and voice network services over a single seamless network – the largest in the world. SITA has 3,800 staff worldwide offering services to customers and members in more than 220 countries.

The modular and customisable Sterling Integrator platform will be integrated into SITA’s existing in-flight catering solution, Aerocater, a secure and independent industry portal that enables airlines and catering companies to interact and exchange information.

The enhanced SITA solution, powered by Sterling Integrator, will provide users with remote access to the latest information via a web services link using the W3C SOAP Protocol. When flight information is updated, it is reconciled with information held in a data warehouse and the catering companies are notified via the portal service of changes to the flights they service.

“The global airline catering industry runs on a massive scale, with an average of 40,000 items being loaded onto a 747 flight at any one time. Working with such high volumes makes it imperative that information is accurate, easily accessible and tightly controlled in order to keep costs down,” said Roy Lee, Senior Director of Marketing EMEA at Sterling Commerce.

“Despite the growing competitiveness of the airline industry, airlines and caterers continue to exchange crucial data using faxes, manual data entry and inadequate computer systems. SITA’s Aerocater offers a revolutionary new way to exchange information between airlines and the catering industry and the addition of our Sterling Integrator solution will enable this service to be developed even further.”

Sterling Integrator has been developed to directly respond to the needs of businesses, regardless of the industry in which they operate, by offering supply-chain flexibility and enabling more accurate and efficient management of business processes. It uniquely offers both B2Bi and EAI capabilities based on a single J2EE platform that has been built from the ground up and can support current and future standards, such as web services, to evolve as business needs expand. This enables greater productivity, future migration options and increased agility.

Rob Rowe, Aerocater Product Manager at SITA said, “Implementing Sterling Integrator into our existing business process and information exchange portal will enhance SITA’s competitive edge in today’s crowded market. It will offer Aerocater customers the opportunity to cut operational costs by improving the efficiency of their supply-chains and streamline their business processes, which in turn will strengthen the relationship between the airlines and the catering industry.”

Sterling Integrator's use of innovative technologies such as XFORMS in addition to Sterling Commerce’s project management methodology, I * SPeCS, allowed the solution to be created and delivered to meet SITA’s aggressive timeframes. The XFORMS component of the solution ties the business process definitions to the browser presentation, accelerating the development process, increasing the flexibility of the solution and reducing the ongoing total cost of ownership (TCO) for SITA.

SITA joins more than 120 customers worldwide that are already realising the benefits of Sterling Integrator with the automated flow of information between their enterprise applications and B2B commerce environments. Sterling Commerce expects to make further customer announcement in EMEA throughout 2003.
