Dr. Eugene Spafford Receives Presidential Appointment
Tripwire Inc., the world leader in integrity assurance solutions, is pleased to acknowledge President George W. Bush’s announcement to appoint Dr. Eugene H. Spafford to the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC).
President George W. Bush stated his intention to appoint Dr. Spafford to a two-year term as a member of PITAC to provide expert, independent advice on maintaining America's pre-eminence in advanced information technologies, including such important elements of the national IT infrastructure as high performance computing, large-scale networking, and high assurance software and systems design.
“Dr. Spafford has more than earned this prestigious appointment,” said Gene Kim, vice president and chief technology officer of Tripwire. “His contributions over the years have helped establish him as one of the pre-eminent leaders in the information technology area.” Dr. Spafford served as Kim’s faculty advisor during Tripwire’s creation in 1992.
The President's Information Technology Advisory Committee was established by Executive Order and is chartered by Congress under the High-Performance Computing Act of 1991 (P. L. 102-194) and the Next Generation Internet Act of 1998 (P. L. 105-305). PITAC will help guide the Administration's efforts to accelerate the development and adoption of information technologies vital for American prosperity in the 21st century.
Eugene H. Spafford is a professor of Computer Sciences at Purdue University, a professor of Philosophy (courtesy appointment), a professor of Communication (courtesy), and is Director of the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS). CERIAS is a campus-wide multi-disciplinary Center, with a broadly-focused mission to explore issues related to protecting information and information resources.
Dr. Spafford has written extensively about information security, software engineering, and professional ethics. He has published over 100 articles and reports on his research, has written or contributed to over a dozen books, and he serves on the editorial boards of most major infosec-related journals.
Dr. Spafford is a Fellow of the ACM, Fellow of the AAAS, Fellow of the IEEE, and is a charter recipient of the Computer Society's Golden Core award. In 2000, he was named as a CISSP, honoris causa. He was the year 2000 recipient of the NIST/NCSC National Computer Systems Security Award, generally regarded as the field's most significant honour in information security research.
Among his many activities, Dr. Spafford is co-chair of the ACM's U.S. Public Policy Committee and of its Advisory Committee on Computer Security and Privacy, is a member of the Board of Directors of the Computing Research Association, is a member of the US Air Force Scientific Advisory Board and continues to serve as a technical advisor to Tripwire, Inc.
