Welwyn Garden City, Herts 21st May, 2003 — Itheon, automated network and infrastructure management specialists for the enterprise, announced today that it has launched its latest networking tool - Itheon Availability Manager: Networks (iAM:Networks).
What is it - iAM:Networks is a combined hardware and software solution, which simply plugs into a network at key points monitoring and storing Network Traffic data, Application Response Times and SNMP Device data instantly. It combines the power of network device management (through SNMP) with non-intrusive monitoring of application response times and network traffic on key network segments.
Benefits - iAM:Networks gives network and systems managers a more complete picture of their network, enabling them to see their network traffic in an easily readable, graphical or tabular format. Problems such as bottlenecks can be quickly identified and rectified so that end-users experience high availability levels. It also helps to determine whether network loading can be improved by moving application servers, printers etc to different segments, or perhaps whether people are downloading their favorite music/games at key busy times. With iAM:Networks you can easily determine whether, by maximising current usage, you can avoid making costly upgrades to your network
The monitoring of Application Response Time allows you to know exactly when thresholds are exceeded through generating an alert. The application can be monitored across the whole enterprise or for key selected clients, including or excluding network infrastructure response times. Collecting data over time will show trends with application responses and network usage, which can be analysed and used for improvements. Reports and graphs of both Application Response Time and Network Usage are available for Management reporting and SLA management.
Differentiator - Uniquely iAM:Networks combines the monitoring of Application Response Times, Network Traffic & traditional SNMP traps and metrics in one easy-to-install, non-intrusive appliance, eliminating the need to purchase and manage 3 separate network-monitoring products.
Frank Puranik, Technical Director for Itheon "iAM:Networks bridges the gap between the microscope detailed analysis tools that a network engineer would use to analyse faults and a Network and Systems Manager who needs to see the overall view of how the network affects the application delivered to the end-user."
How it works - Non-intrusive detectors are placed at strategic points on a network and continually monitor packets of information moving across it (e.g. web traffic, fttp traffic, mail traffic etc.) A central data consolidator then collates the data gathered by the detectors. When user-defined thresholds or parameters are exceeded, event notifications are issued using a variety of alerting mechanisms. There's a drill down facility to look at data by application protocol, IP addresses and even sessions to analyse who/what is causing any bottlenecks.
Analysis of current bandwidth utilisation can help optimise network usage in order to avoid costly upgrades. Network issues can be dealt with quickly and easily because of iAM:Networks' diagnostic nature. Quality of service to end-users can be improved through measurement of application response times, and drill down investigative capabilities can pinpoint the root cause of any problem, which can be rectified to ensure minimum downtime. And finally provable delivery on Service Levels to the business at both a technical and management level is deliverable with iAM:Networks.
