SMART initiative from DTI boosts future development of xplatform range to provide real-time use of information across multiple organisations without need to remove legacy systems

Derbyshire, UK – Esprit Soutron (ESP) has been awarded a grant worth £150,000 by the Department of Trade and Industry. Run by the Small Business Service (SBS), the award is part of an initiative called SMART (Small firms Merit Award for Research and Technology) which provides grants to help small and medium-sized businesses to make better use of technology and to develop technologically innovative products and processes.

The grant will be used by Esprit Soutron to accelerate development of a portable software solution that will allow organisations to provide access to previously fragmented information resources on their networks and make it available for their internal consumers or to support inter-agency co-operation. The solution will provide access to the information through standard web browser technology allowing secure access for any appropriate user whether directly connected to the network with traditional desktop technology or utilising mobile communications technology via personal devices.

One of the most recent implementations by Esprit Soutron has been in the area of health and social care, where the majority of organisations hold closely related particulars about an individual in a variety of systems that have been designed to support different business processes. Within these information ‘silos’ information is stored in different models and accessed through different systems that are often proprietary and closed in nature. This fragmentation of storage and access can undermine efforts to gather a holistic view of the data held by the organisation and can severely undermine efforts to exchange details between agencies in sometimes-critical circumstances.

The Esprit Soutron solution will provide the ability to build a single coherent model of the data that is being held by the organisation and will also provides connectivity with the legacy applications and datasets to draw information components together on demand. The SMART funding will assist ESP in meeting its goals of a ‘Structured Information Gateway’ solution which can be implemented quickly without the large-scale project management or long lead times normally associated with any form of connectivity project.

The Department of Trade and Industry Development Project Awards were introduced to help businesses develop new products or processes involving a significant technological advance. This means new or substantially improved products that are likely to form the basis of a major step forward in terms of productivity, sustainable development, competitiveness or practice for an industry. Criteria for success included reviewing ESP’s technical work plan ie. approach and timescales to carry out the work, experience and skills within the company, marketability of the product and the strategy for business development and growth.
