White paper reveals the risks of company owned mobile devices

Hook, Hampshire – 3rd June 2003, HarrierZeuros warned today of the potential dangers that company owned mobile phones pose to the integrity of an organisation in its latest white paper entitled, ‘Corporate Governance Issues for Mobile Communications’. This report comes out just days after a man received a custodial sentence for stalking a female friend via email and text messages.

The issues outlined in the white paper, range from general abuse of text messaging causing increased call charges and the potential for offensive or racist text messages to be sent, to inadequate security in protecting confidential messages. In addition, it outlines the steps organisations can take to protect themselves and discusses the technology that will available in the future to assist in mitigating the risks.

Sarah Carter, co-author of the white paper says, “The warning signs of the potential dangers came about 18 months ago when we saw many of our clients start to implement content scanning technology into their email systems. We had reports back from customers that they had noticed other trends emerging including an increase in their text messaging bills.

We believe that compliance with new email policies has caused the casual emailing of jokes and other personal communication to be driven underground onto mobile phones. This culture has then developed and expanded to include business communication, which has proved extremely beneficial to many organisations. However, the potential dangers of unregulated and unprotected mobile communication is unfortunately a very real threat to organisations that have not taken steps to protect themselves.”
