London, 10 June, 2003. A survey of leading retailers, conducted by front line management software provider, XcelleNet, has revealed that the majority of retailers are planning to increase their use of handheld devices over the coming year. The handheld devices will be used for key business applications such as stock taking and queue busting, with retailers expecting the benefits to include improved stock control, increased speed through the till and improved customer loyalty.
“The survey confirms the increasing importance of mobile devices in improving retail efficiency,” explains Bob Apollo, Senior VP & Managing Director of XcelleNet. “The responses also demonstrate a widespread recognition of the need for effective management, citing software updates, security, device recovery and inventory as key concerns. XcelleNet’s management software has been designed to address these concerns by managing all the devices and applications at the front line to deliver tangible benefits in terms of process efficiency, cost reduction and customer satisfaction.”
Those retailers who did not foresee an immediate roll-out of handheld devices listed barriers including cost of devices, support and security concerns. The survey also revealed that retailers have mixed feelings concerning their consumers’ readiness to use handheld devices themselves in store, with a lack of technical understanding given as the main obstacle.
XcelleNet’s infrastructure technology encompasses every aspect of device management and data movement for all devices at the “point of action”. It enables enterprises to deploy and synchronize handheld applications with enterprise data, enforce system configuration, backup and restore critical information, and track hardware and software assets for all mobile devices-from laptops to PDAs to smartphones.
