- Cuts DVT and cardio-vascular diagnosis times with WinScribe Internet digital dictation

Reading, England - Lister InHealth, the leading provider of managed healthcare services to the NHS, is piloting an innovative system to further enhance its diagnostic services. The company, which has around 240 staff working for public and private hospitals, is piloting WinScribe Internet digital dictation to allow consultants to dictate diagnoses at any of 32 sites and call on remote secretarial services to prepare the reports.

Lister is hoping the new system, which is being piloted by 25 consultants, will make the service more efficient, faster and more accurate.

According to Derek Hughes, Technical Director at Lister InHealth, the system should provide a multitude of benefits, not least to the patients. "The perception of dictation systems remains in cumbersome, tape-based systems. The new breed of system uses PC technology and the Internet to provide clear digital recordings that are never lost or broken and a robust workflow system to allow the right person to transcribe the recording, no matter where they are located, allowing for a faster diagnosis."

Consultants view MRI and CT scans either directly from film or from a digitised scan on PC and dictate their findings into WinScribe Internet. Dictation can be into a central server via a telephone line or into a digital dictation recorder, and is sent to a central WinScribe server at Lister InHealth's Newcastle facility.

The recorded analyses are automatically allocated to medical secretaries around the country or around the world by dictation workflow rules, allowing for appropriate skills to be employed as well as load balancing between hospitals.

"We use the latest technology to firewall the servers and advanced encryption technology to protect patient diagnoses and are confident we are taking a major step forward with the WinScribe system," he added.
