Organised crime now joining threat to enterprise data

London 4 July 2003 - Organised criminals are muscling in on IT crime, posing a hugely increased risk to end user systems, said Detective Steve Santorelli of Scotland Yard’s Computer Crime Unit in his keynote address to the second Think Data Security and Storage Conference, held today in London.

Santorelli said the combination of organised crime syndicates moving into IT crime, combined with the changing profile of hackers threatened a seismic shift in the nature of computer crime.

“Since the drugs market has become saturated, organised criminals are recruiting hackers, who themselves are changing and are looking to make money from their illegal activities. Traditional hackers failed to get the cash, but now extortion and blackmail rates are rising because of a combination of organised gangs and traditional hackers.”

Think Data 2003, is the second annual conference organised by Ideal Enterprise Solutions, part of Bell Microproducts Inc.

The event attracted some of the biggest names in the storage and security industries including VERITAS, Network Associates, Hitachi Data Systems, EMC, RSA, HP and Microsoft addressing an audience of hundreds of end users and IT resellers.
