8th July 2003 - A mobile phone company is encouraging users of its new service to spend less time on the phone. Whilst other major UK mobile operators are seeking to increase average revenue per user, BusinessPhone, which launches tomorrow, is designed for companies that wish to discourage their employees from spending too much time on the phone. As part of its drive to encourage staff to get on with their work rather than ‘chit chat’ with colleagues or friends, BusinessPhone offers unlimited free text messaging between employees.

BusinessPhone is a GPRS based service that operates using a handheld Personal Digitial Assistant (PDA) and integrated phone. It gives companies total control of their voice call costs by enabling them to manage individual or group mobile phone profiles. For example, maximum call duration can be placed on certain phones, calls may be limited to a specific range of numbers, and if necessary, daily/weekly call limits can be applied. The system is totally flexible and companies can make changes to any profile within a matter of minutes.

“Mobile phone costs have not only spiralled out of control in many companies, they have simply no idea how much they’re spending on their mobile communications costs,” said BusinessPhone spokesperson, Steve Alderson. “It’s also difficult for companies to work out if an employee is using the phone predominantly for business purposes or chatting to his work colleagues and mates.”

BusinessPhone is aimed at companies that provide employees with mobile phones, but do not need to provide them with unlimited or uncontrollable phone usage. It is particularly beneficial to organisations whose mobile communications costs have either spiralled out of control or where the total cost of using mobiles is simply unknown, but is probably higher than it should be. “Some companies can calculate the cost of their mobile phone service by looking at the bill from the operator – ie, the actual cost of the mobile calls - but often they won’t take account of fixed line to mobile calls, which is hidden and often quite hefty,” explained Alderson.

As well as helping companies to control and in some cases curb their mobile costs, BusinessPhone offers a number of innovative features. BusinessPhone Text provides free and unlimited text messaging between employees. It can be used mobile to mobile and also extended to office-based personnel using the BusinessPhone Office Suite. Users also benefit from the extended message length, QWERTY keyboard typing and large screen size.

“Text messaging has proven to be an extremely popular method of communications,” said Alderson. “By offering this free, employees will be able to communicate with each other effectively, without the need to spend hours on the phone.”

With BusinessPhone Text Status, companies can ensure that urgent messages are delivered and actioned promptly. By returning an automatic time and date stamped message status for every Business Phone text message, including received and viewed notifications, it provides the reassurance needed for the safe and timely receipt of all communications

Customers can also provide their staff with controlled mobile email access, again applying restrictions to its usage where necessary. Companies can limit the range of domains that users are allowed to communicate with using email. Email access can be kept simple and restricted to internal company communication, or extended to include customers, suppliers, subsidiaries or partner companies.

BusinessPhone is available to customers from as little as £55 per user per month, which includes the PDA and integrated phone, accessories rental, hardware maintenance, SIM card, and monthly line rental. Potential customers of BusinessPhone are invited to see for themselves if the service would save their business money. The BusinessPhone’s website – – has a Savings Calculator that shows companies typical cost savings.

BusinessPhone is owned, marketed and serviced by Cognito Ltd.
