Rainier PR has formally launched a specialist crisis management PR service for technology companies. The service, called Floodgates, has been created for the specific requirements of the hi-tech sector as it seeks to rebuild its fortunes after several years of economic woe. Rainier PR is a technology-specialist PR agency based in London.

The agency has noticed a growth in crisis management PR assignments during 2003 as technology companies that have largely refrained from communicating externally during the economic downturn seek to increase their marketing focus. However, they are conscious of increasing scepticism in the market and a need for more sophisticated communication strategies.

“Crisis PR is coming out of the closet. The technology sector has been hammered by a recession and firms went from having pretty much only good publicity to pretty much only bad publicity,” said Stephen Waddington, managing director of Rainier PR.

Rainier PR believes that as confidence returns to the technology sector, clients will recognise the need to be wiser in developing communication strategies and that there is a greater onus on corporate responsibility and that not everything can be geared towards selling products and services.

“Few personnel in technology-focused agencies have much real experience of managing crises. Yet it’s a service that clients are increasingly seeking, if only as a precautionary measure. When it comes to the crunch, there are often only two options – making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear and keeping a story out of the press altogether. Our expertise lies in not making an issue out of a crisis-level situation,” Waddington added.

Recent Rainier PR crisis management assignments include sensitive partnership and licensing deals, major customer losses, management team resignations and staff redundancies.
