Cambridge, UK – August 18, 2003 -- HeadPorter.com, the official student TXT and E-mail alert service, announced today that the University of London Union (ULU), Leeds University Union (LUU) and Oxford University Student Union (OUSU) have become the latest UK student bodies to sign as exclusive marketing partners and implement its real-time information service.
Students, did you ever stand in the rain because a match was cancelled at the last moment, show up for a class that was moved to another date, or miss out on the hot exam tip that everyone else received… How about the free stuff being handed out at the Union, or the not to be missed event that took place last night? Better still how about being able to control what advertising you receive and block out all that Spam!
The idea of using TXT as a method of informing students of Union promotions and events in real-time came to the founder of Head Porter Ltd, Dr Simon Strojan, while he was events organiser of his college at the University of Cambridge. After completing his degree he joined a leading new media firm, where he met others who saw the potential in a service that could instantly inform students across the UK on lifestyle, academic and career information. The service that has been developed provides students with complete control to select electronic vouchers via text and email on any thing from food to drink, nightclubs to travel. Students have an online tool to select and de select whatever interests them and therefore have complete control over the Union and Commercial messages they receive.
The Head Porter team realised that this service could serve as a method of generating income for both the company and its University Union members, and decided to operate on the basis of a revenue split, passing on a large percentage of income from campaigns to the under funded Student Unions.
Making use of the latest developments in electronic messaging technology, HeadPorter.com piloted in June 2002, quickly signing up the University of Cambridge’s Students Union (CUSU). The concept immediately proved itself when a number of shops and clubs made use of the service to send out promotional e-vouchers via Head Porter’s fully automated service. Soon after recruitment agencies were making use of the service to send out targeted TXT notifications to student finalists of specific courses, and marketing research agencies started to use the system to invite students to specific focus groups and to gather information on-line.
The HeadPorter.com service is not just about promotions and concerts however, Union Clubs and Societies regularly use it to send out relevant information via TXT or E-mail. This is done through the secure, automated HeadPorter.com Web portal. The University of Birmingham however found another way to draw benefit from this valuable tool when Head Porter provided them with the first ever University Students’ Union TXT voting service. This was successfully trailed by the Birmingham Guild of Students in March 2003.
The University of London Union (ULU), Leeds University Union LUU and Oxford University Student Union (OUSU) voted to join the system in August of this year. ULU is the combined Students' Union for all the students of the University of London, which represents more than 30 major London Colleges and Institutes.
‘This is excellent news for Head Porter and the 120,000 ULU, 30,000 Leeds and 16,000 Oxford Union members who can now choose to receive information relevant to them in real-time’ commented Dr Simon Strojan, Head Porter’s Managing Director. ‘With every new university that joins our service we can command better promotions and offers, which benefit both the students and our University members’.
