Broadband Point-of-Sale Applications Benefit from Continuous High-Speed VPN Uptime

London, UK – September 16, 2003 – SonicWALL, the leading provider of integrated Internet security solutions, today announced the SonicWALL TELE3 SPi. The compact firewall/VPN appliance supports broadband and ISDN connectivity and is specifically designed for Point-of-Sale (POS) environments. In the event of an interruption in broadband services the unit will automatically fail-over to ISDN and fail-back again once normal service is restored ensuring continuous high performance security.

Retailers, banks, hotels, restaurants and petrol forecourts require reliable data connections for their POS applications. The SonicWALL TELE3 SPi was developed as a security solution for these retail environments. It ensures constant uptime for Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnels over broadband by automatically failing over to an integrated ISDN terminal adapter whenever there is a service interruption. Once the broadband connection is re-established, it is automatically detected by the SonicWALL TELE3 SPi which immediately fails back, thereby maintaining the best possible connection. In addition, the SonicWALL TELE3 SPi’s light weight and compact size make it easy and convenient to deploy at kiosk sites.

SonicWALL TELE3 SPi also supports optional content filtering, rapid email attachment blocking, gateway-enforced Anti-Virus and SonicWALL management services.

“We just installed the SonicWALL TELE3 SPi with a car dealership,” said John Roche, managing director of Iesys, a Birmingham-based integration specialist, “and already the feedback has been terrific. The SonicWALL TELE3 SPi is enabling our customer to move from leased lines to ADSL-based, secure VPN connections. Due to the inherent unreliability of ADSL and the high level of traffic that the customer's WAN carries it was imperative that we provide a failover capacity of up to 128k. That made the SPi the natural choice. The old network failed up to 5 times a week and sometimes ran very slowly whereas the new VPN is many times faster and we have not had a single failure since we deployed it.

Continued Roche, “So now my customers can spend time thinking about how to spend the £30,000 to £40,000 a year that this solution is saving them, rather than worrying about when the next network failure will occur.”

Also suitable for teleworkers and homeworkers, the SonicWALL TELE3 SPi offers the combination of a stateful packet inspection firewall with VPN and backup ISDN capability at a reasonable price.

Each unit comes with a 75 Mbps firewall and a minimum of 10 VPN tunnels. The compact size of 16.51 x 11.83 x 3.378 cm, allows the SonicWALL TELE3 SPi to be placed at every till. The appliance supports well-known network protocols such as NAT, dynamic address allocation, DHCP and POP over Ethernet for DSL connections.

Pricing and Availability
The SonicWALL TELE3 SPi is available through SonicWALL distribution channels from mid-September for MSRP £535 (excl. VAT) for the basic 10 VPN tunnel model. Versions with 25, 50 or unlimited tunnel options are also available. For more information, visit www.sonicwall.com/products.
