New solution is key to making information pay

Chessington, Oct 2: Information Lifecycle Management – or how to manage the whole of an enterprise's data throughout its useful life - is set to be one of the big talking points of Storage Expo 2003, at London’s Olympia o October 15 and 16.

This is the view of Ian Lockhart, Head of Professional Services at Ideal, one of the event’s major sponsors.

Lockhart commented “Both resellers and end users will be able to use the event to get up to speed with what Information Lifecycle Management, or ILM, can deliver. It’s all about helping enterprises to save money by making full use of the stored data at their disposal.”

Lockhart warns that ILM alone is no quick fix. “It’s critically important to know what data you’ve got stored before you can even talk about ILM. Only when you know what you already have can a solution be mapped onto it. That’s why Ideal is offering, through the reseller channel, a highly cost effective audit of storage resources.”

He said that resellers who are able to offer their end users such a service will be ideally positioned to be their client’s primary supplier of networked storage solutions.

Storage Expo – the main event

Forming a key part of the Storage Expo event, Ideal’s Advice Zone will be a forum where delegates can meet vendor, distributor and reseller storage experts, view presentations and see the latest technology.

The following is a brief summary of what just some of Ideal’s vendor partners will be showing and talking about on the day:

Certance

Certance is a worldwide market leader in tape backup products and data protection solutions, with more than 12 million drives installed. Certance’s Data Protection Architecture (DPA) initiative’s goal is to deliver high-end data protection benefits to small and medium businesses at a price they can afford. The initiative proves that Certance, a Seagate affiliate, has made a clear evolution beyond its traditional role as a manufacturer of tape drives.

Hewlett Packard

HP offers organisations of all sizes the ability to manage storage assets simply and centrally. HP’s entire product range is designed with manageability in mind, and most storage products can be operated remotely. This reduces the cost of storage ownership, enabling storage management staffing levels to remain constant as business needs and storage levels increase. On the day, HP will be discussing My first SAN, and spreading the message that more flexible, intelligent and easier-to-manage storage solutions are needed to keep up with today’s business challenges. The benefits of this approach include:

• Reducing the amount of time it takes to manage and allocate disk space

• Ensuring that key applications run without the constant worry of hardware failure

• Avoiding slow system performance when data backups overrun into business hours

• Easing the pressure of deadlines when data has to be restored

Hitachi

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies enables innovation everywhere. It is dedicated to helping advance the way people store and access information and is a global storage technology company that brings customer-focused and full-service approach to solutions for the hard disk drive marketplace. With substantial and dedicated investments for research and development, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies is positioned to inspire and lead the evolution of storage component technologies in the spirit of its founders. The company is committed to moving hard disk drive advancements beyond accepted limits in technology, application and marketplace.

Legato and EMC

Financial services firms are facing increasing scrutiny from regulators over compliance with SEC requirements relative to retention of electronic communications. LEGATO's EmailXtender helps support compliance in several ways: Real-time captures of messages and attachments to gather record-keeping copies to central location; Creates a full-text index for easy search and retrieval of relevant messages; Stored messages and audit results are immediately available for review compliance personnel or other authorized users; Audit trail and reporting on archive, including message/mailbox access, user access and message/volume deletion; Integrated WORM storage capability to meet non-rewriteable and non-erasable media requirement. EMC Centera is the world's first content address storage (CAS) solution specifically designed to meet the unique requirements of "fixed content"—unchanging digital assets retained for active reference and long-term value. Centera provides online access with assured content authenticity and petabyte scalability for a wide range of fixed content including X-rays and MRIs, electronic business documents, e-mail archives, check images, electronic statements, and completed CAD/CAM designs.

Network Associates

Network Associates creates best-of-breed computer security solutions that prevent intrusions on networks and protect computer systems from the next generation of blended attacks and threats. Under the McAfee Protection-in-Depth Strategy, it offers two families of products, McAfee System Protection Solutions, securing desktops and servers, and McAfee Network Protection Solutions, ensuring the security and performance of the corporate network. Network Associates offers computer security to large enterprises, governments, small and medium sized businesses, and consumers.

Snap Appliance

Snap Appliance is the world leader in network-attached storage (NAS) solutions. With the industry’s largest installed customer base, Snap is expert at providing application-specific storage solutions for leading enterprises and organizations across a wide range of industries. The Snap Server product family and GuardianOS represent true business value, providing innovative technology and rich feature sets that allow organizations to leverage their information assets. On show will be the Snap Disk 10 is a 1U expansion array that provides scalability to the award-winning Snap Server 4500. Featuring four hot swappable disk drives in a slim, rack-mountable chassis, the Snap Disk 10 offers large storage capacity, high data availability and maximum space efficiency. Combined with the Snap Server 4500, the Snap Disk 10 provides a simple, scalable cross-platform storage solution ideal for file sharing and backup in data-intensive industries. A single Snap Server 4500 can support up
to two Snap Disk 10 arrays allowing end users to satisfy current storage needs and easily expand capacity to handle future requirements.

StorageTek

StorageTek is the innovator and global leader in virtual storage solutions for tape automation, disk storage systems and storage networking, offering a broad range of storage solutions for digitised data. It will use the event to talk about Information Lifecycle Management. Ensuring that data is available whenever users need it has been at the forefront of IT requirements for some time now. But all data is not created equal. What’s important today may be of limited use 30 days or even a few hours from now. Other data may be extremely important on the day a financial analyst runs a month-end report, but far less so the rest of the time. These constantly changing data availability requirements create a problem because companies can’t afford to keep 100% of their data in a high-end, high-availability storage system. Some data has to be stored on less-expensive storage systems that are somewhat less readily accessible. The key, then, is matching the right data asset with the righ
t storage asset, and to do so automatically. Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) is a discipline for achieving this kind of data management nirvana.

VERITAS

VERITAS Storage Management solutions optimize storage resource utilization, simplify administration of heterogeneous environments, and provide for continuous availability of mission-critical applications. VERITAS leads the market in providing highly interoperable, storage management solutions that work seamlessly across an entire infrastructure (applications, databases, servers, and storage devices), helping enterprises gain control of complexity. The company’s theme at Storage Expo will be Business Continuity. Despite the clear message that downtime is disastrous, Gartner research shows that fewer than 30 percent of Fortune 2000 companies have invested in a full business continuance plan. The reason for this oversight may simply be that the technical challenges seem too daunting. Or perhaps the cost of implementation is perceived as too great. These are viable concerns, but they can be addressed with Business Continuity solutions from VERITAS.
